Im planning on having my smith add a surefire comp/can adapter (same as the adapater on the m40a5) on my m24 profile barrel, the question is how much "gap" does the rear of the comp need to clear the can, or i guess how much of the barrel length needs to be turned down since the adapter fits over the barrel?

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

It should come with the directions on what to turn down for your smith. Here's a couple pics of my 338 adapter on a #7 barrel

Hey Mike- What gives? Are you moving to PA?

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

Glad to help Mike.

That's a 20" #7 in the pics. The MTU will be a little heavier but with the can on it will look fine. Here's a couple of pics of the whole rifle with the 338 can installed. The rifle is a .308. Can works fine.

i am not 100% sure what the exact contour is on this as i just asked for something close to a mtu contour. if it isn't a true mtu contour, i am sure it's close. it is finished at 18.5" but i can't help with pictures of it with a can.

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

surefire was absolutely no help when i had this exact question a while back. who ever tried to answer my tech question failed miserably. i have since found this on brownell's site: <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">...with 5/8-24 muzzle threads and (due to overlap design) first 2.15” of barrel behind threads clear of obstructions and no more than .775” in diameter.</div></div>

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

The .338 version uses a larger thread pitch. Not sure which one but know it's more than 5/8-24.

Yea, I wish but luckily we'll be purchasing two cans for dept use, unfortunately it won't be mine!

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

If any of you guys have SureFire suppressor questions feel free to ask. Here is a picture of my rifle with a SureFire 762K. The barrel diameter is 1" at the muzzle. I can get a closer pic later today if you need it.

For the 30 caliber adapters the barrel is turned down to .775" for 2.75" then threaded 5/8x24 to fit. Time the brake by adjusting / cutting the internal shoulder or by using the provided crush washers and rock set in place. Dont pre thread or cut until the brake/adapter is in hand due to timing issues unless your using the crush washers.

Yes. There have been POI shifts but to be fair most every can and adapter there will be some POI shift as long as it’s repeatable.

I had a batch of Surefire adapters (MB762SSAL/RE) that had some issues with excessive run-out in the exit hole that will cause POI shift and can even cause baffle strikes, especially with this type of adapter. I contacted Surefire but never got what I would call a timely or adequate response so now I check every one.

This is only for the SS adaptors. I have a 762K muzzle brake on my .308 and it only had to be turned a small amout past the threads. You can see it in the picture above.

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

I know the .338 suppressor will perform adequately on the .308 but how about the brake without the suppressor? Do you notice a difference in felt recoil? Reason I ask is because I already own a thread on .308 suppressor but was thinking about getting a fast attach style. I figured I might as well get a .338 for any upcoming projects I might get myself into.

Can I use the Surefire MB762SSAL/RE on a rifle chambered in .300 win mag?

Yes. The suppressor is designed to handle a 300 win mag as well.

Re: Surefire can adapter ?

Why are you having to run down dimensional specs for a machine job your smith is going to run? Your smith should be the one to have this information on file if he/she is doing this type of work.

If you are going on an information hunt for "how to install the SF adapter" and conveying it back to your smith, I would be very careful. You drop the ball on one spec and the barrel could be jeapordized. SF has specific machining dimensions for installation of every adapter they make.

Have your smith contact the proper people at SF and ask for dimensional print #70122 or its revision. This is the Barrel Matrix that they issue for dealer installed jobs.
