I usually just use foam plugs. However, I have been shooting .22LR at 300+ and can't hear if I hit steel with the plugs in. I came across these surefire ep4 plugs and they look like they might work for what I need and they are cheap. Has anyone tried them?https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1591104111

I have tried electronic muffs in the past. Returned them as they hit the comb and the wind was annoying. Electronic plugs are too expensive.

I'm a fan, but I'm not sure they will allow you to hear impacts on steel at 300 with a .22. If you open the center, the Db reduction goes down also.

I usually wear these with the center open under some electronic ear pro at PRS matches. I've had my electronic muffs ride up on the comb shooting next to dudes with APA brakes on. Not fun.

Broke out my EP7 ones yesterday. They worked great outdoors with an AR and pistol.

I did put some electronic muffs on over them though when shooting indoors last night. For the price and relative reusability, I’d give them good marks.

These have become my preferred ear pro when outdoors. They are really comfortable and do a decent job on sound suppression. Try both the 2 flange and 3 flange to figure out which ones fits you better.

I'm at the point where I can just take my hearing aids out and almost need no hearing protection.
I always have worn muffs for shooting or just being at the range in general.
It's a combination of 100's of thousands of pistol rounds going off in comped gun when I was doing a bunch of USPSA RO'ing, my past work environment (loud tones and noise pollution) and the fact that rock music couldn't be too loud (teenage stupidity).
As for the Surefire plugs I am likely the only one here who didn't think they were great. But I judged them by the initial offering many years ago and have not tried newer versions.

Love mine whenever I’m shooting a firearm where a good cheek weld is necessary. Wear my Walkers when i’m Shooting handgun or AR, but I can’t seem to get comfortable on a scoped rifle with any type of muffs...

Good decibel reductions and very comfortable.

Yeah, you probably won't be able to hear .22 impacts at 300, but I am a big fan of the Surefire plugs. I've had both the flanged and foam pairs for a couple years now and they're the best plugs I've ever used.

I’ve got some of the originals from way back at SHOT 2012 and they work great! As many have said, I wear them under some MSA Sordins and they work amazingly well.

The only earplugs that work well for me are the foam ones, and then only some of them. The Surefire earplugs will lose the seal within my ear depending on how i hold my jaw. Same for the custom molded earplugs I have. Some foam plugs are made from a material that expands too rapidly and I can't get them in my ear well. However, the Radian orange plugs are great. The best I can say is try them- I did. Maybe they will work better for you.

Both my daughter and I run them for NRL22 comps without the plug in.
I think they are comfy and they are perfect for being able to block any “cracks” but yet allow for conversation and the RO to be heard. Centerfire I make sure the plug is in and that they are fully seated.
