Surefire Muzzle Device for Accuracy?

Hello all,

I am looking to have an 18" 1:7.7 CLE Krieger barrel converted for use in my LMT MRP-L. I currently have a Surefire SOCOM 556 Mini 2 in jail and I'd like to be able to use it on this barrel. Would anyone be able to suggest which Surefire 5.56 muzzle device might be best for accuracy? I'd like to avoid the Warcomp variations since they don't play very nice with suppressors in terms of dB reduction. I've read that over torquing a muzzle device can apply stress to the end of the barrel, so I'll ask that whatever I choose be installed towards the bottom of the spec (~20 ft-lbs) with some Rocksett on top for security.

Not considering the Warcomps, this leaves the closed tine flash hider, 2 port brake, 3 prong flash hider, and 4 prong flash hider. Thoughts?

I was thinking one of the pronged flash hiders might be best because they should have radially symmetric exhaust flow, but I’m not sure if that matters much.

My 6 ARC build is shooting around 1/2 MOA at 100 and seems to hold that to 600 with a Surefire muzzle break on my Proof barrel. I never tried with another break or bare muzzle.

I know a Battle Comp on my 18" SPR type build made the accuracy go away with my hand loads. The rifle was sub 1/2 MOA and with that comp it opened up to almost 2 MOA. I went back to the A2 and groups went back to where they were supposed to be.

3-prong is my go-to for rifles that will be suppressed the majority of the time. I haven’t seen any loss of “host rifle accuracy” with a 3-prong.

SF Mini II on 16-18” precision gun is the heat.

I typically run with 3-prong or 4-prong on my NJ "Others" since flash-hiders touch Premier Murphy Zedong in his no-no spot. But they don't really add/take away from an accuracy or felt recoil impulse to the shooter nor lateral movement from said recoil. Same goes for the closed tine, which I honestly cannot tell a difference.

The brake is good for slight lateral movement reduction, the little bit that there is, they're much better suited for clearing out the stalls to your left and right if flat range shooting which some mil pressure ammo or pissing-hot handloads.

Another option is to grab one of the prongy-boys and stick a SF Warden over the top which sorta-kinda-not-really acts as a linear compensator.

When I wasn't living in a socialist goose-stepping shithole and could have suppressors, I used brakes on all mine as I was in the camp that the brake acted as an "artifical baffle" though I'm not sure if that opinion was any more than a SWAG

TL;DR - don't overthink it, just put whatever looks cooler.

The "legacy" FH556SA and 212A would choke the accuracy out of a gun. IIRC @MSTN and I had discussion regarding boring these out a bit and that being something of a fix. The CAM4FA556 style had much larger bores and I had those on several SPR's that shot great.
The 215A 4-prong and surefire 4 prongs I like a lot.

SF muzzle brakes have done fine for me. 3-prong is fine. I've not had great luck with the closed tine warcomp and the jury is still out on the open tine Warcomp.

Just when I thought I was getting "smart" about firearms/shooting... never would have thought that a muzzle device could meaningfully affect accuracy.

I've been looking at the Knight's 3-prong as an alternative to the SF3P... anyone have any experience with the Knight's? Currently have some unused SFs set aside for future builds.

Your Mini-2 will barely take the edge off as far as suppression goes. So, your concerns about one Surfire SOCOM Warcomp device "not playing well" with their suppressors is unwarranted, in my opinion. With you build, it appears accuracy is the priority. Cool.

All of the surefire SOCOM devices are designed to have a repeatable fit to index the suppressor at the same position (that nub at the 6 o'clock position on the muzzle device interfaces with the receiving notch in the suppressor). Mechanical repeatability = "accuracy".

As far as your concerns about "over-torque" goes.... uhhh maybe don't purposely over-torque it..?? Surefire has installation instructions, which include torque specs, and rocksett included with their muzzle devices. I follow those instructions Surefire provides because they've done a shitload more T/E than I....and everything works. It would take a lot more torque than what's specified in the instructions to somehow alter the muzzle/threads/whatever you're worried about.

I have the standard SFMB SOCOM brake, SOCOM 3 prong, Socom Warcomp with my full size RC2. As far as loudness goes, I can't tell a difference on barrels of the same length. Maybe the decibel meter can, but I don't carry that around in real life, so it's irrelevant.

When you say "accuracy" do you mean mechanical repeatability overall? Or point of impact shift when going suppressed to unsuppressed?

There will 100% always be a point of impact shift when adding/taking away weight from the muzzle. If the weight is at the same place every time then shift will be repeatable and able to be compensated for (i.e. a zero shift in your ballistic software).

Did you ever pick a muzzle device? I have a RC2 in jail. Going with a 3 prong on an 11.5" but I have a 16" proof build I'm may run the RC2 on as well. I can't decide if I want to go with another 3 prong or go with the brake for the proof barrel.

I totally forgot about this thread. I haven't had the barrel converted yet, been too busy with other projects. I decided to go with the three prong for that barrel to ensure that the gas flow is radially symmetrical. I had been considering the closed tine, but I found this video which shows how a standard A2 behaves on a pencil barrel (about half way through the video). I realize the barrel I have is much heavier and stronger, but I want to minimize creating an input that will cause barrel deflection anyway, so three prong it is. Now to find one in stock...

Ok thanks. I have a 3 prong installed on my 11.5 but was thinking about the brake for my 16" proof. Since it is a bench gun I was thinking the brake would help mitigate the jump/recoil more than the 3 prong. I'm still doing research.

I disagree that suppressors degrade accuracy. Surely, any suppressor will result in a shift in point of impact, but once you adjust, your shooting should be just as good. We fit a number of Surefire suppressors and muzzle devices, and they all seem to work quite well. The Warcomp will result in more back pressure, and will otherwise do fine. If you are shooting purely suppressed, the brake is probably a smidge of a better option. As far as KAC, that is a bit academic. KAC suppressors are nowhere to be found, and Surefire is quite attainable. There are other good and perhaps better suppressors, but Surefire is darn good, and I would not shy away from using that, if that is your choice.

This is the article I was referring to and if you look half way down, they compared bare muzzle vs warcomp without the can attached. This is what I'm looking for. Accuracy with a muzzle device, not POI shift.

Thanks. I'll have to take a look at that in more detail. Seems like the APA Micro Bastard comes in 1/2x28 threads but has a 30cal hole, which is interesting which may make it less prone to induce accuracy issues.
