Surgeon Build or TRG-42?

Now that Surgeon is selling actions, I got to thinking that I would REALLY like a .300 WinMag.

So the question is, doa build ona Surgeon action (or other) or just buy a TRG-42 in .300 WinMag.

I am currently shooting a Rem 700 PS-1 that has been modded as follows:

Manners T-4A with mini chassis
Timney Trigger
Schuler muzzle brake
Tactical bolt knobViper PST 6-24x FFP on 20 MOA mount

For the money you will be hard pressed to beat the TRG.

It looks like about a $1K difference, with the TRG being more expensive.

I can't see where the TRG would be more expensive. They are running 3,800 and a typical Surgeon is north of 5,000

I can only speak for what I'd do. Since I have a couple of Surgeon based builds I really like some of the features and would change others. I like the integral recoil lug, as it makes swapping barrels that much easier. I do not care for just a 20 moa rail, and would like more options. With that said, if I were going to do a build today on a long or short action it would be on a bighorn action.

Out of the two, I would go TRG.

If you have a few hundred more I would look closely at the Desert Tech SRS. It is a great platform and will allow you to run multiple calibers. I have been a dealer for Desert Tech for 4 years and have been running one of their rifles ever since becoming a dealer. I have a good friend with a TRG that is going to pick up a Desert Tech SRS from me after shooting my rifle.

Glad I saw this, been asking myself the same question. Just finished a custom with a Surgeon action, Bartlein, Huber concepts, Manners exc. it's fricking sweet. But the other day Beretta had a semi trailer with a walk threw display at Cabela's, I got my first chance to put my hands on a TRG 42 in 338 LP. They now have one in there gun library, everyday it calls my name lol. Needless to say I'm going TRG! Good luck!!

Did you look at some custom gun shops? I just bought a 6.5 Creedmoor from Mark at Accurate Ordnance. Their customer service is fantastic. Their quality is outstanding and the pricing is good. It is by far the most accurate and well built rifle I ever owned or shot. I've been a 30 caliber guy all my life and just switched over to the 6.5mm (.264 calibers). I love the rounds accuracy, reloading ability/components, and lighter recoil. I don't think I will shoot my 30 calibers anymore now.

The TRG is a system with each component designed and built by one designer and one company. The other a hodge podge of pieces, good pieces…. but pieces. Plus the fucking TRG trigger is the best out there.

Owning a TRG in both 300WM and 338 Lapua I think they are amazing. I am looking for another TRG in 300WM for my wife but do not want to pay what Euro-Optics is asking, about $3700. I will just wait and find one hardly used for about $2800 to $3000.
I might add that the TRG in 300 WM will be a collector as they are no longer imported. I was lucky to find a new , unfired TRG in 338 Lapua for $3100 from a small gun shop that could not sell it, it is the newer model with dual ejectors, etc.

I am not the best shot and only can do .5 moa at 100 yards and .6 moa at 200 yards. My friend used my 300WM and was able to get .4 to .3.5 moa at 100 yards. I have no complaints with that except I need to improve my shooting to his level.

I have been looking on line but I am struggling with all of the model designations, each being listed for the same price, $3048. Where can I go to get a description of what the letters and numbers mean?

I am looking for a .308 with a 20" barrel.

Glad I bought my 300WM TRG 42 when I did. I liked it so much I bought the TRG 22. Never looked back!

TRG is a win-win. My TRG22 in .308 shoots .3 MOA at 100 all day. If it shoots anything more than .5, I'm doing something wrong. Buy the Sako and you'll never regret it.

Trg's are a tad on the light side. I prefer heavier rifles if I'm going to be shooting ELR with bigger cartridges and for mostly shooting off the bipod prone. The Surgeon XL is a great fit for a heavier rifle and I like the integral 30 moa rail and recoil lug.

Being that I prefer 90 degree bolt throw and single stage triggers I sold the TRG42.

TRG in .300 if you can find one. My 42 is a laser with 208s, I've had it out to a mile. I'm seriously contemplating selling some stuff to fund a .308.

When it came to owning a 338 LM in either a custom build or the Sako TRG-42, I went with the Sako and couldn't be happier! Shoots bug holes, and the barrel cleans up really fast since it's chrome lined. But Sako accessories Are Freak'in expensive, BI-pod $400, Three ring scope mount $400, Magazines, cheek weld risers, etc. are all very expensive to buy. In the end the cost to do a custom build would be a mute point vs. buying the Sako, but your choice? I have a Surgeon GAP 260 that George built himself that is super accurate as well, but I've also shot with guys like Sky Leighton using his Sako TRG-22 that creamed me at the Steel Safari this year! So really it's the man behind the gun then the name on the gun in my own opinion.
