I am brand new to reloading. That being said, I spent months on here reading, watching videos...learning. I feel like I have a decent grasp on how to do it correctly. I have a Forster press, redding and Forster dies, etc.. Anyway, I did some measurements to determine COAL and base to ogive to the lands for various bullets I've got to try.
I know everyone's chamber is different and I don't expect my numbers to be the same as everyone else with a surgeon scalpel, but at least want to verify that I'm in the "ballpark." I purchased the rifle from surgeon...not sure which reamer was used to cut the chamber, but it appears that it's shorter and tighter than the chamber in my fn spr. Anyway, here are the numbers
Berger 175 OTM: COAL = 2.8755, base to ogive = 2.2545
Berger 168 hyb: COAL = 2.9500, base to ogive = 2.2375
Lap. Scenar 155: COAL= 2.8065, base to ogive = 2.2020
Ogive measurements were taken using hornady bullet comparator. I'm not too worried about the COAL, but find it odd that scenar oal is considerably shorter thar the berger bullets because the scenar is pretty much just as long as the bergers. So that means the Scenar is seated deeper in to the case, correct? Or do my numbers look off? I did the measurements several times to make sure I got consistent numbers but didn't test multiple bullets of the same type. Should I take several measurements using say 5 different scenars and get an average? Thanks!
