I dont know how many of you have been following this story, but it just got real ugly, real fast.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2012/02/josh-powell-explosion-fire-killed-boys.html

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">An explosion and fire Sunday tore through the house of Josh Powell, long under investigation in the disappearance of his wife, Susan, apparently killing Powell and the couple's two young boys.

Authorities said the small house near Fredrickson, Wash., burst into flames moments after a social worker dropped off the two boys at the home for what was to have been a supervised visit.

According to Graham Fire and Rescue officials, the social worker had dropped off the boys, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, but she was prevented from entering. The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and the home exploded.

"She moved away from the house, a very smart move on her part, and moments to minutes later, the house exploded," Graham Fire and Rescue spokesman Gary Franz told the Los Angeles Times.

He said "credible reports" from witnesses suggested that the Powell children were inside the home. Fire officials found the bodies of an adult and two children, who are now assumed to be Powell and his sons, Franz said.

"Everything points to Josh Powell and his two sons," he said.

He said Pierce County sheriff's officials were treating the home as "a crime scene."

Images of the home showed a smoking, blackened hulk with the charred frame of a vehicle standing in what was once a garage.

Powell has been a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, who was last seen on a snowy night in December 2009 at the home the couple then shared with their children in Utah. Powell said he took his children on a midnight camping trip -- despite the snowstorm -- and returned to find her gone.

Powell took the boys to live with him and his father in Washington state, but lost custody to Susan Powell's parents after thousands of sexually explicit pictures and videos of women and young girls were discovered on the computer of Josh Powell's father, Steven Powell.

Josh Powell had been trying to regain custody of the boys but suffered a setback last week when a Washington state judge ruled that he must first undergo a psychosexual evaluation, based on the images found in the home.</div></div>

    Re: Susan Powell

Is there another part of the story that I am missing? As the story reads, the father and two children are dead, so are you people reading it as a suicide/homicide?

    Re: Susan Powell

That's how I'm reading it. He took the two boys from the social worker, wouldn't let her in, then ignited the gas killing himself and the boys.

    Re: Susan Powell

Yes, he is the person of interest in his wifes disappearance in 2009, his very strange story that he left to take his boys(3&5 at the time i believe) camping at nightime and 20 degrees or something like that, and then returned to find his wife misteriously missing. And now the SOB takes his kids into the house and burns it down. Here locally I have heard rumors that the children had began talking about the camping trip, and discrediting the story.

    Heres the latest, just in......

The young sons of Susan and Josh Powell, who died with their father when he ignited an explosion in their Washington home, were beginning to verbalize that their mother was in the trunk of their father's car on the night that she disappeared in 2009, a lawyer for the missing woman's parents said.
Attorney Steve Downing told the Associated Press that Braden and Charles Powell, who were 2 and 4 at the time of Susan Powell's disappearance, were beginning to tell their grandparents details about the night that their father took them on a late-night camping trip during a blizzard, including the fact that their mother disappeared after leaving in the car with their father.

"They were beginning to verbalize more," Downing said. "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that mommy was in the trunk. Mom and dad got out of the car and mom disappeared."

Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah did not return phone calls inquiring about the children's assertions about their mother's presence on the December 2009 camping trip, AP reported.

"Quite frankly, this has obviously quickly unfolded up in Washington and we're obviously just working through the details ourselves here," Powell, who is not related to the family, said earlier on Sunday.

Josh Powell set off an explosion at his home Sunday that killed himself and his two sons, who were there for a supervised visit.

"We believe that he killed his kids and himself," Pierce County, Wash., Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer said Sunday.

Josh Powell's lawyer, Jeffrey Bassett, said he received an email from his client minutes before the explosion that said "I'm sorry, goodbye," but he didn't see it until two hours later, when he was informed of the blast.

Bassett told AP he knew his client was upset about being denied custody of his sons at a court hearing last week, when he was ordered to undergo a psychosexual evaluation and polygraph test in order to get them back.

Graham, Wash., Deputy Chief Gary Franz told ABC News that a Child Protective Services (CPS) worker had just dropped off Powell's two sons at the house for a supervised visit. Powell took his two sons inside the house and then locked the CPS worker out.

"The children were just right in front of her as she was walking up to the door," Child Protective Services spokeswoman Sherry Hill said. "They went into the house and Josh shut the door right in front of her and locked it."

The CPS worker smelled gas, stepped away and the house exploded. The case worker was not physically harmed.

"He grabbed the kids, locked her out of the house, and immediately the house went up in flames, very quickly, very big, so we believe that Josh Powell intentionally set this fire," Troyer said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and found the three bodies. Police are awaiting verification from the Medical Examiner's Office, but said they believe the bodies are those of Josh Powell and his two sons.

Troyer told ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle that emails Powell sent to authorities seemed to confirm that Powell planned the explosion. Troyer did not elaborate on the contents of the emails.

The house, which was on a dead end in a quiet residential neighborhood, has burned down to a charred frame.

Josh Powell is the only named person-of-interest in Susan Powell's 2009 disappearance, but he had not been charged. The couple's two sons were placed in custody of Susan Powell's parents in 2011 after Josh Powell's father, Steve Powell, was arrested on charges of voyeurism and child pornography.

At a hearing Wednesday, a statement from the West Valley City, Utah, police noted that information and images were found on Josh Powell's computer that "specifically related to their children's welfare," according to ABC affiliate KTVX in Salt Lake City.

The police did not specify what the information was, but Judge Kathryn J. Nelson ruled that because of that information, Josh Powell would not be allowed to have his children back until he submitted to a psychosexual evaluation and a polygraph test, the report said.

Bassett, Josh Powell's attorney, said the ruling was unfair to his client, who has not been charged with any crimes.

"Utah was dangling the alleged content of this disk. If this disk contains what they're saying it contains why haven't they arrested my client?" he said at the hearing.

The children were to remain with Chuck and Judy Cox until Josh Powell's next hearing, which was scheduled for July. Josh Powell was allowed twice-weekly supervised visitations with his sons during that time, KTVX reported.

    Re: Susan Powell

My understanding is the assumption was he killed his wife back in 2009; but there was no proof; but just recently the older kid verbalized "mommy was inthe trunk" at that camping trip; hence the reason for the murder or the kids and suicide. Why he didn't just kill himself and leave the kids..

    Re: Susan Powell

Update, this guy was really fucked up. Killed the kids with a hatcchet before he blew himself and them up.

As investigators pore over the gutted Washington state home of Josh Powell for evidence explaining how and why he murdered his two sons and killed himself in a gas explosion, ABC News has exclusively obtained what is believed to be his final words to his loved ones.
Powell left a voicemail for his family just 20 minutes before attacking his two young boys Braden, 5, and Charles, 7, with a hatchet and igniting a gas leak that blew up his house on Sunday afternoon.

"I am not able to live without my sons, and I'm not able to go on anymore. I'm sorry to everyone I've hurt. Goodbye," the voicemail message said.

Many are now looking at the tumultuous relationship that Josh Powell had with his father Steven Powell, whose September arrest led to charges of 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of child pornography. The pornographic images were kept in the home the two men shared with Josh and Susan's boys – a fact which led to Josh Powell losing full custody of his sons.

The boys were ordered in a Washington court in September to remain in the custody of Susan Powell's parents Chuck and Judy Cox because they had been living in a dangerous home environment with sexually explicit material, and because of the possibility that Josh Powell participated in the voyeurism and child pornography charges against his father.

Steven Powell has now been named a person of interest in the disappearance of Susan Powell, according to Seattle's Q13 FOX News, which reports that he was not overly emotional when he heard the news of the explosion, and has been uncooperative with Pierce County deputies. He is currently on suicide watch.

John Hallewell, who was Josh Powell's best friend, says that Sunday's murder/suicide was likely not done as revenge against his missing wife because "all he ever thought about was himself."

"Josh has his problems, but he was trying to do what was right and start a family and do all those things … I think especially once Josh moved to live with his father, and he just got a hold of him, and basically he went downhill pretty fast from there," Hallewell told ABC News.

"I don't think it could have been for revenge," Hallewell added. "I think it was more a case where he thought he was in a corner and didn't have a way of keeping the kids, and thought if I can't have them nobody's going to. I don't think he even thinks enough about anyone else to do it for revenge."

Alina Powell, Josh Powell's sister, released a statement on Tuesday regarding her brother's death.

"Josh and his boys spent more than two years being crushed alive by hate, harassment, and abuse. None of us could have anticipated the devastating tragedy that took place Sunday, but what this unimaginable loss shows is that hate will never end well," Alina Powell said in the statement. "Hate kills."

Powells Moved to Utah to Escape Father

In addition to finding voyeuristic images of two of Steven Powell's neighbors on the 61-year-old's hard drive, investigators found images of his own daughter-in-law, Susan, who went missing in December of 2009 under bizarre circumstances.

In a September 2011 interview with "Good Morning America, Steven Powell said that he was in love with his son's 28-year-old wife, and that his son was fine with that.

Police in Washington say that's simply not true. Sgt. Ed Troyer, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman called these statements fabrications.

"Everything he's saying about Susan and him having any type of relationship is a flat-out lie. She didn't like him, [she] thought he was a creep and weird," Troyer said.

Susan Powell's friends say she told them her concerns about Steven Powell were a major factor in the family's decision to move to Utah in the first place—to raise their children far away from her father-in-law.

"When I first met Josh they has just moved from Washington to Utah, and they were trying to get away from the influence of Josh's dad," Hallewell told ABC News adding that Susan had told him that Steven Powell would never be allowed to set foot in her house.

Just last week, in the latest of an ongoing custody battle between himself and Susan's parents Chuck and Judy Cox, Josh Powell made a declaration to the court that he was the best and safest person to be raising his two sons, saying he had proven to be "a fit and loving father."

Days later, he had donated the boys' belongings to Goodwill, seemingly preparing to murder the family he told ABC News in August he would always protect.

"The people who know me know that I'm a good dad," Powell told "GMA" in August. "I work hard. I put my sons first. I was a good husband. I took care of my family."
