Anybody load the above round? Wife just got a new target pistol, info for loads seem to be a bit skimpy, at least what's in my manuals. Would welcome any suggestion for a load. Seems that the most common bullet weight is 98gr.

Re: SW 32 long

I just gave my mother a smith and wesson pistol with a 3 inch barrel in this. The nice thing is, since the came out with the 32 HR mag, they came out with better bullets. Hornay makes hollow points. Find an old reloading book it will be in there.

Re: SW 32 long

It belongs to the family of cartridges 32 S&W -> 32 S&W Long -> 32 H&R Mag -> 327 Federal Magnum.
The shorter ones will always work in the longer chambers.

I have bought a number of 100 year old Colt double action revolvers in 32 S&W Long. I make scope mounts for them, and unscrew the barrels, and re time the cylinders.

In all of them I have soon blown the forcing cone with experimental loads. I weld up the forcing cone and re cut it. Then the forcing cone seems to be able to take anything.

The most power for the least pressure I have found experimentally is with LIL'GUN and with 800X.

I want the bullets to seat at 1.29" or 1.3". There are no bullets with a cannelure that supports that. I have been crimping them upside down in a 308 Lee factory crimp die. I made a bushing so they drop down in the right amount.

I can get 1413 fps with 85 gr and reasonably low pressure.
Not much pressure, but a lot of recoil, so I need the crimp, or the bullet yank out and jam.

If you want the smallest groups possible, you are going to want to use hollow base wad cutter cast or swaged bullets seated down into the case until flush. With a tiny amount of Bullseye or Unique powder. This would imitate the old 38 special target loads that got such tiny groups.

Re: SW 32 long

At one time I used to shoot a lot of .32 S&W long with a semi-auto target pistol. My match pistol was a Fiochi/Pardini and along with most similar target pistols could only chamber full wadcutter rounds with the bullet seated full in the case.

I found it quite fussy to load for - As a straight blow-back competition pistol it was desirable to keep charges low and 100% reliability, along with good accuracy was essential.

My load of choice was 1.6gn of Bullseye with a swaged 98gn Holow based wadcutter measuring (I think) .312.

I found a slight taper crimp was required to aid reliable feeding. To measure the very light loads I made an insert to fit the Lee auto-disc measure. Although it worked I was never very happy about the consistency so ended up weighing every one. As I was loading several hundred a week at one time I found this very time consuming - The result was I invented the Targetmaster automatic powder trickler.

Alas, in the UK, our target pistols have been taken from us to make the world a safer place.

Re: SW 32 long

The Hammerli SP 20 looks and excellent target pistol. In my competing days the Hammerli 208's were often seen and the 215 were just coming on line.

I can't recall loading the 83gn bullets although I did do a fair bit of testing with the chrony and a Ransom machine rest.

You are looking for a velocity of around 750-800fps - much more than that and you run the risk of the hollow base separating. I haven't loaded a .32s&w long for 20 years so check your data carefully.

Happy days for me though. A few diehards were still using wheelguns but not really competitive and the odd one or two were still using .38's, either the excellent Mod 52 semi-auto that can only chamber the full wadcutter or the S&W Mod 14 single action revolver but they really couldn't keep up with the new .32's.
