Starting off with a base remington 700 sps varmint looking for affordable quality. I've owned a adl varmint before and bought a used fixed 10 ss. I liked it but used it in a dmm match and struggled with seeing 8 inch plates out past 300 yards. It didnt help that I practiced with a friends 3.5-15 nightforce so in comparison I wasn't a fan of the ss and sols it with the rifle. Now with another 700 I was considering buyin another 10 ss but I've been thinking about the fixed 16. I think it would def help when shooting matches but am worried about it being to much magnification at closer ranges. I'm definitely a beginner in the tactical precision world but just wanted some input.

I have the 16x and kind of wished I got the 12x instead, kind of overkill for the 350 yds available at my local range. Still a great scope for the money though, hopefully I can put it to use at longer ranges.

Really good case for saving for a variable. You will be much better served by a range of magnification instead of one not suited for all the ranges you shoot at.

That said, I have a SS16 in the safe. Good scope, but the narrow FOV and critical eye-box make in less then optimal for most uses.

I was considering the 16x myself, but have heard other reports similar to the above - I went with the 12x.

I have the 16x, but if I were doing it again, I would get the 10x HD or the 3-15. The eye box on the 16x is very critical and glare is very significant as the sun sets. I have shot a friend's 10x HD and looked through the 3-15 and both are a significant improvement in optical quality over the 16x.
