I shoot a local silhouette match where the chickens are at 80 yards, pigs are at 120, turkeys are 154 and rams are at 200. During the matches, I've noticed several shooters change ammo through the match. In some cases, this is because they aren't getting the accuracy that day that they want out of whatever brand they were shooting and may change from Eley to Lapua, or Federal etc...
The other reason for changing is the one I wanted to ask about here. As jbell shared in his excellent post, https://www.snipershide.com/shootin...mfire-ammo-what-happens.6900199/#post-7206704
I'm not looking to change brands due to the challenges of mixed lubes for 5 - 20 shots since some of my rifles take as many as 20 shots to settle down after changing brands/lubes. What I am curious about has to do with using the same brand of ammo, Eley or Lapua for example, but using cheaper ammo for the close targets and more expensive match ammo for the farther targets. I noticed one shooter, who is an excellent shooter by the way, who sent back and forth through the match shooting SK Standard, SK Pistol Match and Sk Flat Nose.
I assume the theory is that the closer targets, the chickens and pigs, are the easiest to hit and therefore don't require the accuracy of the turkeys and rams at the longer distances? I have a friend that I've been trying to get to shoot the match with me, but his excuse is that he can't find cheap ammo that will shoot consistently at distance and he doesn't want to shoot expensive ammo that he can use for benchrest at the silhouettes? I love to find cheap ammo that will shoot well, but can't understand having $3k plus into a rifle plus another $2k plus in the scope and then worry about spending $10 on a box of ammo...
Have any of you tried the cheaper ammo on closer targets and then transitioned for targets that are farther out?
