Anybody use a tablet device for hunting purposes? Im talking about, actually having it in the field with you. Maybe use it for maps, ballistic calculators, weather data, i dont know...im just pullin stuff out here.
Basically im trying to justify buying one. When i search for justification before a purchase, i want to be able to use it for as many things as possible.
I know there are a couple nylon companies out there making "tacticool" pouches for like the ipad, kindle, etc...

just looking for some feedback.

Thanks

Re: tablet for hunting

I think if your trying to justify it then "sure".

But in reality it would be quite unhandy in the field if you ask me.

All of those things you mentioned are nice and can come in very useful but I think a smart phone is much more practical for field use due to size and your going to have your phone with you anyway.

I use an ipad.
Google Maps for maps.
Weather TAP Zoom + (the best radar as it updates every minutes vs every 5-10 minutes and shows the direction of storm cell and speed)
Bulletflight M for ballistic calculator.

iPhone and be done. Your not seriously going to pack around something the size of an iPad even the mini and enjoy that. It's too big And too fragile imho

Re: tablet for hunting

Our lease is managed and we have a MLD Level 3 permit. We go through all of our trail cam pictures of bucks and classify the bucks as "management", "trophy", or "no-go" and put them into their own folders on shutterfly. Then when the other lease members are in the stand and they see a buck come out, they get on shutterfly on their iPad to see if we have pictures of that buck and to see what we have it classified as so they know if they can shoot it or not. So yes, a tablet can be useful in the field. That's about the only use that I can think of though where a tablet would be better than a smart phone. For everything else such as ballistics, weather and stuff like that I would prefer a smart phone

Yeah, get one! When you have Jr. With you and he is bored after the first hour on a stand, let him play Angry Birds or something while you watch for game.

In reality, I find that my phone does everything that I need, so the pad stays in the truck. As I do more in the field, I am trying to pare down what is in my kit for the hunting that I do.
