Does anybody have an experience using TAC in the .260Rem, particularly with 123grn Lapua Scenars? I'm looking for an idea of the safe start and max loads..
I have tried a couple of the more well known powders, and I'm not getting the accuracy at the velocity I want...
I am currently waiting for some H4350 to come in, but in the mean time, I have some TAC onhand and thought I wouldgive it a try..It's quite well thought of in the 223.Rem and .308win, so I thought it might work in the .260Rem..
No, not TAC. I've used Big Game and Hunter. TAC might be interesting with the HDY 95gr V-Max I'm using, once I run out of the current propellent, which is really a bit slower than optimal.
I'd use TAC where I'd use Varget, Big Game where I'd use W760, and Hunter where I'd use H4350.
It should work with the 123's similarly to varget or RL-15.
You may not make it much past 40.0 grains but your velocities should be descent.
You may want to start around 35.0 grains
IMO Tac is too fast for the .260R. It will work with lighter bullets, but I'm betting you hit pressure limits before the velocity is where you want it.
As mentioned above, H4350 works very well and seems to be pretty popular.
If you are desiring more accuracy, the last thing you do is go for a jug of ball powder.
Let me just quantify this by saying that ALL of my plinking loads use ball powder.
I would not use ball powder with ANY match bullet in anything. That's not to say that it cannot shoot accurately, because it can. But it will never match the performance of a good stick powder. There is a reason why the military uses RL 15 under its match bullets and BLC (2) in the same caliber for cheaper loads.
For most of us, we may not ever see the difference, but you'll never see ball powder in the winner's circle at any big matches.
