At the risk of sounding like a real dumbass, I have to ask: What's the notch in the bottom of a tactical stock for? A rear bag? I've shot benchrest ( just at a club level} for years, and my stocks ride the rear bag with no notch just fine.

OK, I'm a real simpleton (my wife has known that for years). Why do you need a notch to do that? I'm 81 yrs. old and haven't shot prone for years 'cuz I have too much trouble getting up and down, but I don't remember having any trouble getting the rifle butt into my shoulder on a Garand.

It allows you manage recoil without having to pull the rifle into your shoulder with your firing hand, some guys can get off cleaner trigger pulls if they do not have to use the firing hand to keep the stock in their shoulder pocket.

OK, that makes sense. But why, then, notch the stock on a .22RF? Is it just to make it handle more like it's big brother, the CF? Or is it just 'cuz it looks cool?

i like to keep the ergonomics on all my rifle similar to reinforce muscle memory...the cool factor is also a nice driving factor too

I'll buy that. The "similar ergonomics" issue isn't important to me. I had to have my pacemaker buried in my right shoulder area and am afraid to subject it to recoil. So had to give up CF, but I do like the cool factor even though I'm older'n dirt. (FWIW, I really didn't mind giving up CF all that much anyway. I've always loved RF and have never been a huge fan of recoil.)

But -- when using a rear bag, do you put the bag in the notch or aft of it?

That's what I've been doing too, but have sometimes wondered if I was doing it right. The world is full of things I don't know. Now there's one less. Thanks!
