Rifle Scopes Talk about luck with a Vortex

hi all my brand new Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 showed up recently and i attached it to my .308 in remington sps which has a 20 MOA base on it with some badger ordinance max 50 rings 30 mm

The reason i am lucky is because when i installed the scope and went out into the paddock my 100 meter zero was just under 1 milradian off the bottom of the vertical travel.
These scopes in particular have 19 MIL in them so what this means for me at the end of the day is i have an optic that i can physically dial elevation to 1200 meters without any holdover whatsoever

has anybody else had the same closeness with the medium between their rifle and optics?

I'm not exactly sure how many mils I have left under my 100 yard zero with my 20moa base on but I have a little over 15mils of upward travel, so I can easily dial the elevation for my .223 for 1000 yards.

Same here, my .223 custom Remington has a 20 moa base and my PST has 15 mils of up before I have to start holding over.

i managed to eek out 18.4 mil + -

the reason im really glad is because i was dreading not being able to dial to 1 kilometer looks like that'll never be an issue lol

the crs zero stop function only needed one shim i was looking at all the ones left in the bag going glad i don't need you guys

If it hadn't turned out that way you could have easily moved from a 20moa base to a 40moa base

ok I have been trying to figure this out. I have a rem 700 S/A with a egw 20 moa rail and a vortex viper 6-20x50 bdc scope. The action has been trued and re-chambered by a competent smith,the barrel is a new Krieger. I sighted it in with a luepold 4.5-14x50 and all was good. I changed scopes and went with the viper. When I sighted it in it bottomed out on elevation and was still 5 inches high at 100 yards and no travel left. Took the rail off and bedded it (the rear base)and re-sighted it in and now I am still 2" high at 100. The scope has 66 moa of actual travel???? I checked the rings and they are the same hieght and thickness. What am I missing?

rifle is a 260 Remington shooting 2840fps

My 6-24 Ffp had 21 mils of elevation for some reason, but with a 20moa base I'm off by like 2.5 mills I think.

rifle is a 260 Remington shooting 2840fps </div></div> mine does the same thing on my 260. I have a Surgeon 591 action(has a built in 20MOA base) with my turret bottomed out it is dead on for 200m so my zero is for 200m which is fine by me because I never shoot that short anyways.

my rifle is shooting amax 140's at 2850fps, I want to reach 1000 and I have a bdc reticle

It seems like this is normal for this scope based on everyone's posts. It looks to me that the PST may have more movement one direction than the other and that is what is giving the strange results. It's certainly not a bad thing but would be nice if it were advertised as such.

I don't actually think it is the scope as much as the round itself in conjunction with a 20MOA base. If you would use a base with a less MOA then you would probably be able to have a 100yd zero.

The scope on my 260 is a 3.5-18x50 IOR.

I believe that you are correct. When you add the amount of advertised travel and the deduct the 20moa rail that would ony leave you with 14 moa. The scope only has 65 moa and is advertised as 68moa so that brings me down to 12 inches to get it zeroed at 100yrds.

Scott at Vortex was really helpful and stated that even if I could get it down to zero it that with 1 or 2 moa left the erector spring would be compressed almost to max which would not be the optimal situation. He also said that with the adjustments that far to the bottom I'd be looking at the bottom of the glass so to speak and that is also not optimum for performance.

I think (not sure yet) that the scope is 3 moa short from what is advertised. When you add that to the 20moa rail and a cartridge (260 Rem)that does not drop like a 308 there is really no real need for the 20 moa rail. Even with a 0moa rail I could still dial up to 1000yrds due to the performance of the Remington 260. with that being said having a reticle like the Vortex EBR-1 MOA would greatly help. I will send it to scott at Vortex and let him look it over and tell me what he thinks.

Hmmm, yours and longarms situations are kind of strange. Whats honestly even more strange is that it has happened to both of you. The 6.5-20 Vipers have been great scopes for us and very rarely do we have an actual problem with this scope. I am very interested to see what I find when I look at Longarm's scope. I will comment back once I look at Longarms scope. I believe he sent it to me today.

I did not send it out today. I will try and get it sent out tomorrow, it is at my fathers. I bought it and set it up for my dad to use on some long range hunts. Now I look like a turd cause I talked him into selling off his Leupold and then I put this Vortex Viper on the new custom hunting rifle. He's not real happy with me now. To make matters worse its hunting season and the combo (scope/rifle)is not working.

The up side is that Scott was really helpful and gave me some good info on the scope. I'll get him to send it off to you Scott and let you see whats up with it.

Scott </div></div> I forgot to include it in my original post but my scope is an IOR 3.5-18x50. Like I said though, it doesn't bother me as I don't normally shoot shorter that 400-500m.
