Rifle Scopes Tangent Theta Updates: 3-15x50 Hunter et al

Just a quick update: I talked to the folks at Tangent Theta and it looks like they resolved all the outstanding engineering hurdles they had, so the scope is now undergoing lifecycle testing. They may want to tweak something as a result of that, but by and large, this is the finishing straight. Once it gets through all of their tests, it goes to production.

Initial release will have the simple reticle that was mentioned in early literature, but I would be surprised if they do not eventually add other options.

Switching gears: they received a significant number of orders for the 5-25x56 with Gen 3 XR reticle and are diligently working to fill them. It looks like Gen 3 XR was received by the market rather favourably. I will be testing one of these shortly, now that their production of these is in full swing.

That having been said, now that I have a reasonable idea of how backlogged these are, if this is a scope you are looking to get, have your favourite dealer pre-order one for you. I am moderately certain that the current production run is largely spoken for. I know several dealers on the Hide (Cameraland, CS Tactical, EuroOptic, etc) carry Tangent Theta, so you do not have to work very hard to get on the list.

Far as I know, Gen 3XR scopes from November orders have not been filled yet so it's probably gonna be a while.

They are well worth the wait.

It is based on TT315M, so it should be in that same general ballpark or a bit less.

This is pure conjecture on my part though.

I’m still looking for a mil/mil. This one is a gen2 mildot with 1/4 MOA dials. Works for hunting

@koshkin.... Would you happen to know if it is the Tool-less re-zero turrets? Or set screw like the 315M? I know it's been discussed that this scope is essentially the 315M with locking turrets. I would assume it also features set screws for turret zero to keep weight down, but just wanted confirmation. Or if happen to have any other confirmative specs about the scope. Thanks.

It is a new turret design.

I think it uses set screws, but I didn't pay much attention to that to be honest.

TT Hunter looks to be close to being released. They have wrapped up with all their technical hurdles a while back and have, apparently, wrapped up all the crazy life cycle testing they do.

Now, they need to make part kits and build a few. I think we will see them before the end of the year.

I am really looking forward to these. They wil have that simple reticle in MOA and in MRAD. Not sure which is first, but that will be an absolutely kick ass hunting scope.

I can see the plex just fine on 3x, but it is thin. In low light, I turn the illumination on.

Thanks. You already educated me on all of this months ago. Ever since I've been watching like a hawk for a decent deal on a TT315M Gen2XR. At the time there had been some recent ones. Ever since, nothing. Apparently people keep these once they have them.

Having hunted Africa with the old illuminated Premier hunter (admittedly not the same scope, but an ancestor, for sure), I've never understood the problems with usability of a doping reticle at 3X. Is anyone taking a long range, low-magnification shot using the reticle to dope? In low light, the conversation changes a bit; but I have found the Gen2XR to be very useful in low light or full light, and at various ranges and in various conditions.

But maybe I am doing it wrong.

Probably.

That said, one of my favorite hunters wears a TT315P and it can take all comers. Granted, this isn't a stalking gun; but I don't usually take a show pony to do my mule's work.

When the hunter is out, I'll take a look.

I meant the usability as a Plex in low light at 3x, not the tree. It just looks thin and so would depend a lot on how controllable the illumination is. Nothing worse than having your night vision blown out by bright illumination. I am kind of assuming that TT has nailed this as well though.

On the Illumination, TT has it worked out on existing optics, I cannot imagine - given what these things cost - they'll release a great scope with a POS illumination system.

For hunting scopes, I usually begin everything at lowest magnification and lowest illumination setting, so yea, I get that.

I'm patiently optimistic. For me, I think this may be the closest one (so far) to place a check mark in all personal specification boxes. Possibly filling that void in crossover. My only concern is the reticle choices that may/may not be offered.

I’m actually hoping it comes in lighter than 27. Otherwise I would just lean towards the 315M. The other features of the H are nice to have, but really dropping weight is what it would take to sway me from the M.

I'll do my best to catch up on the vernacular. It is nice to know I had mad cred at some point.

I expect the Hunter to be in the same general ballpark as TT315M, given that these are clearly related designs. Whether it is the same or a little less, I do not know.
