Interesting concept.

There is a website trying to get GeoTargeting started, where people set up targets at different parts of the country, giving coordinates of the target and required shooting positions.

Kind of like GeoCashing.

I'm gonna post one for NE Wyoming.

Check it out at Target Caching Forum

HA - I could see folks really having fun with this one...

ex wife's house, Dianne Feinstien's afternoon tea location ...

On a serious note - I think its a great idea. Could be really well mixed with unknown distance shooting. I say only GPS the shooting location - don't GPS the targets - just list the number of targets and determine range etc.

The site just got put up, not many know about it.

use non steel targets that are less expensive in case they are stolen...

Some people suggested using marked rocks or some other natural target on public land. That's probably what I'll do if I decide to get involve.

hopefully it works out and the knuckle-heads don't ruin it.

yep, pretty much.

i've barely even set the site up. i was hoping to at least get some content in before getting too much attention. but this is totally a community effort, so feel free to jump in.

i don't expect to get very popular, but i think it will be very fun for the sort of shooters who would drive a couple hundred miles to hike a few more miles and take a poke at a target.

idea was to have the general section open and the target caches visible only to members who introduce themselves. it's obviously not very good security but more security can be added if the knuckleheads start to ruin it.

people seem divided on that, but it's up to the guy who places the target. i suspect there will be plenty of both, where you have only the shooting location and have to find the target, and also where you know the target location and then have to look at the topo maps and sat photos and try to figure out the best place to shoot it from before you get there.

Just signed up.
I'm going to try to put up two in the next few months. One in Pinoche hills south wilderness area one in susanville.
I'll make them both out of scrap so if they get stolen it won't we a big deal.
Whether or not forum members will steal targets is an interesting social experiment......

Another here waiting for approval. Sounds like an awesome idea. There's a lot of public land in northern wi and he UP, this will get me out and explore some new spots to hang targets.

guys could be a bug or something in the system i need to sort out. there's not an "approval" process other than sending you an email to validate your email. if you are waiting on a mod or something to approve your account pls send me a pm or email and i'll get it sorted. thanks!

btw, prez, i would be surprised if a forum members would steal a target, but i've been surprised before. more likely random folks 4-wheeling around discover a target and just knock it over or something. it's likely a non-shooter wouldn't even recognize it as a target and would think it's some sort of sign or marker and think some rednecks shot it up.

This should be a fun deal. I just signed up on the Forum.

Here is the my contribution: If you live in the Western Missouri area or Eastern Kansas area somewhere around Kansas City
and have access to a location to place 1-3 targets I will place an order with JC Steel Targets: JC Steel Targets
and supply the targets, belting and post to hang them. I have used my JC steel targets for several years and they are the Best!

Please feel free to PM me or email me directly: thebiggun(at)prodigy.net

Taliv, there was no approval process just had to click the link in the email. Worked as you said it did. I didn't post on the forum yet, I will.. I did a little scouting the other day and found a couple spots in northern Wi that will work. I'll be keeping my eye out for some rail road plates. Will defiantly post on the forum when I get targets up.

Awesome idea. I'm not sure how many places on the east coast would allow for this type of thing? But I really do like the concept.

I think it would be interesting if the people posting targets would provide two sets of information:
1. Shooting location and compass heading to target. I could see this being very useful for entry level shooters.
2. Target location only. If there are restrictions (like target facing East) post those, but give the shooter some freedom in selecting his location. Let the advanced guys tackle the more advanced aspect of the target.

Sure, people could use both sets of data to calculate distance to target, but they could carry a laser range finder, too.

Again, this is a really neat idea.

ssatt68 went and shot the JC steel target cache today. the pictures he sent are friggin awesome. I'm pretty jealous. amazing landscape. he should have the pics posted soon.

Range report for Jake Vibberts’ Target Cache’
Target Cache’s can be found at Target Caching Forum
With my girls planning to finish up Christmas shopping and my total lack of desire to go shopping again and since I went black Friday shopping with them Thursday morning at 0001, I earned a day to goof off.
I packed up my shooting stuff the 243 win and 6.5 SAUM and drove 4.5 hours east to Prescott WA to link up with Jake at the Jubilee Youth Camp.
Weather was excellent minus a light layer of fog coming off the Snake River, which made finding and shooting the far target a chore.
Temp 37 deg
DA -800
Winds 2-4 from the North
Gun target line was 182 deg Magnetic
Target was 4 degrees up angle from the shooting location
Target size 12” X 24” horizontal rectangle and the range was over 1100 but under 1200 yards. Jake had two other targets with good back stops at 880 and 910, which were helpful since I don’t trust my Chrono and wanted to calibrate my velocity at distance before taking it out to the far target. The canyon was crescent moon shaped and was cause for some funky winds bouncing off the walls. Both targets at 880 and 910 required a .2-.4 left wind hold, but the far target being straight down wind and the bullet path being above the canyon walls ended up being a center hold shot.

Bottom line is that this was the most fun I've had shooting in a long time. Most of my shooting revolves around prepping for a match or shooting in one and this was just heading out to link up with a buddy and sending it.
Jake,
Thank you

I just joined the target caching forum. I hope some members set up some targets near kc mo. I am gonna see if my folks would let me set up a target cache on the outskirts of their property in the ozarks after I get some steel from the JC group buy.
