A question I am not sure how to ask so please hang with me for a moment.

We are adding to our private range target collection and I need some targets for longer ranges. The question relates to target size vs distance for practical application. We all know aim small miss small but what sizes are practical for "tactical" matches or rifles?

I currently have a 12 tall 4 wide in the middle 2 wide top and bottom steel "mini me" and a 8in skull target courtesy of OSU Architect. I use the mini me out to 400 but I don't think we will get much more distance on it. The skulls are good for us at about the same distance.

Not wanting to get sloppy, but looking to shoot more run and gunish out to 900 or so yards.

Thoughts on sizes that work well from 400 to 600, 600 to 800, 800 +? Or am I looking at this the wrong way?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Target size / range question

Look for targets that are 1.5-2 moa in size for prone. For 800 yards that would be 12-16". It depends on the position you are shooting from, but targets will be bigger for positional, barricade and stress firing exercises, but they typically are not fired past 400 yards or so. However, it is fun to shoot farther and good practice.

Re: Target size / range question

For Practice shoots I put out 1 MOA targets at every hundred, and Larger at most of the further ones.

Example... 800 yards I generally put a 8" and a 10 or 12" depending on conditions.

Under stress, on the clock... Dif story, 1.5 - 2 MOA is realistic and plenty hard. Always taking into account heavy and variable wind will make things Much harder. A 10" Plate @ 1000 yards is great with little to no wind, or a constant wind.... but Not realistic with the wind whipping around.

Target sizes are all moa, we just shoot them with mil/mil scopes.

Re: Target size / range question

Like mentioned 1-2 MOA sized targets for prone work well. For positional or stress fire 2-3 MOA. Just basic guidelines. You might want more or less.

Re: Target size / range question

We use 1/2 and 3/4 size IPSC's for the long stuff and 6"-12" circles for 800 yards and in.

For positional practice we move the circles in closer to 300-500 yards.
