Hey guys, I just recently built a .338 Lapua and am looking to put together some targets for long range shooting. Using 3/8 mild steel plate my .243 puts a large dent in it at 1000 yards but does not pass through. I dont want to ruin my current steel plates shooting them with the .338. I have lots of AR500 steel targets but the biggest one is basically 75% of the size of a standard ipsc target. My question is, what material are you using and what size are the targets you shoot at for 1500 to 1900 yard shooting? I have a source locally for 3/8 AR500 plate and can get it cut to any size necessary.

my thoughts are....if you hang any thin AR500 at them distances....you ain't going to go through them....it may look like a potato chip after some time....but then you turn it around and carry on.

I just swung by the steel place and picked up a 24x24 inch piece of 1/4 inch thick for 50 bucks. I'll try that and see how it goes.

Try calling around steel fabricators/scrap yards. I have been able to pick up scrap high carbon steel in various shapes and thicknesses for free. 5/8" HCS at least for heavy guns at any yardage if you want them to last. 338LM would probably penetrate or bang up 1/4" at max ord.

338LM is not very forgiven on steel, unless it's AR500. With 3/8" AR500, at 500 yards, it puts dents in mine. At a 1000, you should be fine with 3/8" AR500. With respect to 75% IPSC size, that's very optimistic at 1500-1900 yards. I am not saying that can't be done, but definitely challenging, especially with strong wind. I have shot regular size IPSC at 1500 and 1700. At 1900, we use the 36" round disc. I plan to use the IPSC size for that range to work on my shooting skill.

Yeah, i figured the 75% IPSC was going to be a tough one. All my other ar500 targets are smaller than that. That is why I was looking to pick up some square steel plates to hang. Like I said I picked up a 24" x 24" 1/4 ar500 plate so well see how it holds up at 1000 and beyond. I would guess it will start to dish when shot at 1000 but that doesnt matter to me. I cant imagine it punching through but maybe denting.

If you want something badass, well procovert just showed you that. If you don't mind doing some welding/cutting go to your local CAT dealer and buy used cutting edges off of large machines. Its the hardest stuff you will find, and the endless variety of shapes/sizes are fun too. You can also use tracks off of the large doziers etc, but they are much more work to deal with due to the odd shape. Good luck.

I've never tried it, but the old galvanized metal trash can lids can still be bought. Of course the bullet goes right through, but they are cheap and should swing a bit when you hit them. They should make a gong sound also, though like I say, never really tried it, so I'm not sure how far away you could hear it.

Look for a heavy structural steel fabricator in your area. Go talk to them and ask for their old templates. In the buildings I put up, my steel companies use 1/2" to 3/4" pieces ranging from 10"x10" to 6'x6' that are free for the taking when all the steel is erected. It's just mild steel but it suits my needs.
