A Tarsier is a primate that lives on the islands of Southeast Asia and has some of the best natural night vision of any mammal. Matbock’s revolutionary Tarsier Eclipse is designed to augment a night vision goggle-user’s experience by providing an enhancement to the fixed focal plane issue found in all goggles. Night Vision can only focus at near or far field on its own. This means that users have to achieve a baseline focus of at least 15 yards in order to see the majority of detail at most distances. However, this creates an focal problem for close-in objects that become fuzzy to the observer. In order to see detail in these closer objects, the user must manually refocus the goggle to a close field. This, in turn, creates another focus issue by making further objects too fuzzy to be resolved. The Tarsier Eclipse mitigates this issue by providing the ability to focus on both near and far planes at the same time.
The Tarsier Eclipse is a small accessory that friction-fits onto the objective lens of most standard night vision goggles. It features a smooth operation adjustable iris that can be quickly set by the operator while wearing the goggle. The iris acts somewhat as a filter that allows users to see detail at 18" to infinity. It can quickly be adjusted open or closed depending on the ambient light present. At complete open, the Tarsier Eclipse will allow the NVG to act normally with no objective obstruction. At complete closed, it blocks all light from the objective except for a tiny pin hole. This allows the Tarsier Eclipse to be kept constantly mounted – doubling as a sacrificial Window and Objective Lens Cover. Replacement Sacrificial Window Lenses are available separately.
Like all night vision accessories, the Tarsier Eclipse’s iris is not intended to be engaged for all scenarios. It helps provide universal focus by limiting the amount of light the objective lens gathers. We recommend using the Tarsier Eclipse in situations with more ambient light or while an infrared illuminator is engaged on target. This makes it ideal for MOUT operations where threats can pop up at multiple distances, yet there is often more ambient light. It is also very useful for driving since the dashboard lights will help provide more light, mitigating the effects of the light loss from the iris. The Tarsier Eclipse can also be used effectively during stealth searches in both urban and rural environments where the operator’s weapon-mounted Infrared Illuminator is engaged.
