There has been much press about Trump's tax reform and it has been all about making him look bad.

So now that the numbers are in (or close). How did you do.
Same as on the news, I am going to want to punch every dumbass that says

" I normally get a refund, but I had to pay this year, Trump sucks"

If enough was not taken from you during the year that is on you NOT Trump.

We are looking at taxes paid 2017 vs 2018.

I will start. 2018 made about $6000 more. My Fed tax was about $1700 less than 2017. State was about the same.

Last year had 51K in itemized deductions (state, local and property tax) + about 12 in exemptions (people). So 63K off the top, this year 24K off the top (2 x 12K each. local income tax/prop tax not deductable above 10K). Made 25% more this year, but my nut do the IRS almost doubled.

I'm in the highest bracket and the move from 39% to 37% really saved me some big dollars, despite the reduced deductions. Not happy with the overall amount as it is an insane amount of our total income, but at least its some relief compared to last year.

Also folks need to remember: this tax cut was about helping our businesses be competitive with their global peers. Simple math: old corp tax rate in US: 35% vs a high productive market like Ireland at something like 12%. Our companies better able to compete now at 21%. I think of it like this tax cut is so my kids have chance of finding good job in 10+ years from now, not directly for us in the present.

The media paints the tax return like it's some kind of payment instead of what it really is, getting your own fucking money back. They'll lie about whatever they can to paint Trump and anything conservative in a bad light.

Lower tax returns means less of a free loan to .gov, and that's a good thing.

What still baffles me is how people continue to get back more than they paid in. My step daughter (single mom with two kids) had $3400 or so withheld, and got a $6000 return. The first time that happened to me when I had a shit ton of non-taxable combat time (therefore very low taxable income as well as had a kid), I told my then wife to go back to the base tax center because they fucked it up royally, in my mind there was no way in fuck you could possibly get back more than you had withheld. When they said it was right, I felt like a dirty whore.

I’m good with it although taxes in general piss me off.
The “soft” taxes; gas, liquor, tobacco, license fees and on and on set me off more. Ohio just passed another gas tax hike supposedly to fix roads. They need it but I’d love to see the breakdown in actual fund disbursements.

Ohio. Trump beat Hillary by about 8 pts. I think I paid around 26K in property taxes (nice home in a great school system), kids went to college, moved to a less taxing place I can shoot in the back yard (legally).

For me it's a whole lot better than in 2003 when I paid half my income to the govt's. Yes you have the weigh the federal burden (stairstepped rate) + both sides of social security and medicare. 7% state rate, 2% local rate, plus all the BS unemployment/workers comp crap that a small business owner pays. Paying half your receipts while knowing others "just skate" really was a pisser, much happier making less money. Yeah, it's f'd up.

Some of y'all are forgetting that certain people DO get a payment when they file taxes.
Earned income credit on kids can actually have you receiving a chunk more than you paid in.
That happened to me one time in 1993. I kept doing my forms and it kept saying my check was about $1000 more than taxes withheld....just didn't make sense, thought I was doing it wrong.

Lots of folks DO get a payment. Sly welfare.

I did considerably better for 2018. ~$200 a month extra in my paycheck. ~$100 MORE refund over 2017.
I need to adjust my W-4 again.

Lowered my taxeble income by maxing out HSA and 401K + 2 kids and the 24000 deductible helped.

no i pay taxes i just keep them adjusted to where i pay but dont owe...i did make a bit more money in 18 but not enough that i was expecting to owe $2400 and my tax lady was shocked as well...i made adjustments so ill be good next year.
