I'm looking at picking up a rimfire bolt trainer . I have been going back and forth between a .22lr and the .17hmr . Then I stumbled across the Quad . Does anyone have some experience with them ? Are they good to go or should I be warned off ? Your comments and experience are greatly appreciated !

Funny you should ask. I just posed the same question to a couple different members here trying to narrow down a search between the Sako and the CZ 455. Both rifles are discussed in various threads here and the answer to your question may not be as simple as you think. I'm still up in the air but leaning towards the CZ and that is mainly due to price and availability. Although I can't find either at the moment. The Sako is harder to find from what I've been told. You are also going to be asked how much your'e looking to spend and what you expect to do with it. Another rifle or two might be recommended as well, depending on what you are looking to do with it, ie: plinker, precision trainer, small game, ability to switch barrels, etc. Will you be looking to upgrade stock, trigger, barrel? By all accounts the Sako is a fine rifle, but a little pricy out of the gate. You've come to the right place for an answer, it may just take you down a longer path than you expected.

DFOOS pretty much hit it. I have one and love it! I put mine in a Manners and put a Rock barrel on mine though.

For all out accuracy, not a bench gun but they can shoot pretty well.

If you're buying a new one and want an HMR, buy one with that barrel as the 22lr barrels are easier to find in the aftermarket.

There are a few of us on here that have them and have been working with them. Asking the questions you really want the answers to is the best way to get the answers you seek.

My budget for this is in the 1-1.5K range . I'm looking for a very accurate rifle that can be used when I only feel like driving to the short rifle range . I know there are a few Annies in that range as well . I try to take the equipment out of the equation as much as possible . That way I know a miss was me and not the rifle . My main interest is for a .22lr but I'm intrigued by the .17hmr . I freely admit that I don't that much about rimfire bolt rifles . That's my main purpose for fielding this question here .

I have read about the ammo issues and searching for that preferred load . I've also seen sorting systems for rim thickness . Once you find a combo that the rifle likes , will it remain consistent ? Or will it be a never-ending search as lots change ? Thanks for sharing !

I should also add that I am looking at repeaters .

Hell, just get a Surgeon Rifle! That is the ratio difference between the trainer you want and the "trainers" people are tending to buy. Remember, a couple of years ago, the concept of "trainer" rifle was to find a cheaper way to practice, and not have to spend a ton on ammo. Well I see this monster was let out of the cage!!!! I am just as guilty, as my Cz 455 is coming any day now!

I've got a pair of Quads, both in Manners T4 stock with Lilja barrels, DIP bottom metal and bolt knobs. One is in .22LR and one in .17HMR. I use the .22LR for paper punching & steel silhouettes and the .17HMR is used primarily for ground squirrel blasting and occasionally for paper punching.

Both are very accurate, bolt lift and feel is short and smooth. I started with one Quad and both barrels but found the switch barrel more hassle than it was worth as I had to remove the scope, swap barrels, reinstall the scope, and rezero... not too bad but I soon realized that if I last put the rifle away with the 22LR barrel the next time I wanted to use it I'd want to shoot 17HMR (or vice versa) so I'd have to swap & rezero seemingly every time I wanted to use it. That got old quick.

A few years ago you could pick up new Quads with a single barrel for about $475 which was a great price, wish I knew about them back then. I paid about $600 used for each of my quads and both already came with a couple mags and the DIP bottom metal & knobs. I sold off the stocks & factory barrels and was into the actions for about $300 each, easily justified. With the current price of new single barrel Quads at $1100+ and stock used quads with a single barrel going for $850+ (unless you find a deal) I think the CZ is a better choice now for building a trainer. Equally as accurate with a good barrel and the CZ is much more cost effective especially if you buy the Precision Trainer which already comes with the Manners stock. The CZ is a good rifle however I prefer the bolt & action feel of the Quad to the CZ.

Mags for the Quad are expensive too.

A BlackOps 40x repeater action build is tempting too. The Anschutz rifles are fantastic right out of the box and used Quads are getting up into that price range.

I bought a clean used one added a Lilja barrel in 17 HMR, Manners stock, DIP metal, bolt handle and spring kit. Stock trigger adjusts down to the 2 pound range and breaks clean. I use it for popping sage rats out to 150 yards and it is outstanding. I was able to get 3/8" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with a mediocre scope. It feels tight, looks good and shoots straight. The CZ with the Manners stock is definitely a better value but I love my Quad.
