Rifle Scopes ? temp range on scope ?

Re: ? temp range on scope ?

It is most likely the sealants/adhesives will fail first at temps extremes.
Different manufacturers use them in different areas.
I have seen one very cheap scope that used a flexible adhesive as the pivoting component of the erector assembly.

Re: ? temp range on scope ?

Throw it in the freezer and see what happens. Or if your weather is like most of the country just bring it outside overnight.

Re: ? temp range on scope ?

I would have no reservations trying Rob's suggestion with my scopes.
ASC winter 07' was a tougher test than my freezer.

I did not fare as well as my optics.

Re: ? temp range on scope ?

USO in my case, but I would do the same to my Bushnell 3200 and Nikon Monarch if I needed to. Come to think of it....both of them have been to the range on sub-zero days....then add in the wind.

I know Rob uses alot of Nightforce scopes, among others.

I would think most hunters have put scopes through worse than I have encountered.
Unless you never expect to be out in those conditions, I would think you would want to know if it is going to fail......before you actually need it.

I was at the range on Friday with my Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40. Here is a pic of the gun, though unfortunately not at the range on said day - I forgot to take pics until I was already packed up).

Temp: 17F
Wind: Very slight coming across right to left.
Precip: Light-Moderate Snow
Time in the Elements: 1 hour 20 Minutes

All fared well. The big turrets proved very nice using it with mittens. It was cold enough that my ejected shells would melt the snow, then refreeze to the concrete in less than a minute.

Re: ? temp range on scope ?

I am a new member and this is my first post.I respect everyones views and hope the same courtesy will be forwarded on. I have been reading an watching alot on this forum. On the Millett Temp. question the online manual from Millett states the scope is fog proof untill
-20 degrees. But knowing first hand how Murphy can show up when you need it the least lol, and take into consideration that it is a $400.00 scope + or - where you buy it might not be a bad idea to take it out to the range on a nice cold day to see how it will work. Besides, the weather dont care when you get called out to do your job.I allways make sure my equiptment it good to go and how the temp. affects it.
