Social media was being hijacked and weaponized against Americans since the beginning of... social media. In part because the 'founders' are sociopathic leftist monsters who think they can control the masses.
In some ways, social media was DESIGNED to be a tool of mass control. And its technology is specifically created to suck people in, draw their return visits and alter their perceptions and mold their views. Even here on our beloved SH... things like 'Likes' and "Achievement badges' and 'post counts' are designed by the software creators to ensure we stay engaged. And LL's community grows and thrives. We are not exempt.
But here on SH, beyond moderation for extreme views or gross rules violations... we are pretty much a community that is not herded, or directed or controlled from on high with fact checking, editing, shadow banning or other efforts by a management which is attempting to mold political or social directions.
On the major platforms there is massive control exercised not only with the software but with highly-partisan and arguably politically-controlled and motivated individuals whose full job it is to suppress not speech... but dissenting views that do not followa certain highly leftist narrative. And has government been involved in this? Absolutely. And in an appalling manner. Ranging from giving total protection to tech companies (who can't be sued by individuals who are harmed) to actually colluding with the censorship and, I'll argue, directing it. And don't forget the NGO's involved... ranging from Media Matters to certain retired Presidential types.
The sad part is that there is a known SCOTUS case called Cubby v. CompuServe that specifically allows tech companies to be held liable for content... IF they moderate or control it. If the company merely provides a platform, they are treated as a library which is not responsible for the content of the books therein. But if the library moderates the content they become a publisher. And are just as liable for the content as any Newspaper, magazine or individual publisher. CompuServe and AOL got around this by having all subject threads 'owned' by independent contractors who ran their forums or areas. The corporate entities did NO moderation and never told its forum owners what was acceptable.
This changed when MySpace and Facebook and the others came along and created a model of total centralized control. But they did so with the protection of the Electronic Communications Protection Act (formerly the Communications Decency Act). That gave them immunity... which it should ONLY have done if those entities worked on the CompuServe/AOL model defined by Cubby v. CompuServe. That ruling has never been turned over by legislation or Amendment. But noone will challenge the illegal ways these social media companies are operating. Because they are too big to stop... And arguably because the political powers-that-be don't WANT them stopped. For the simple reason that they are a tool of mass control.
A tool that is almost entirely in the hands of a few complete leftist oligarchs.
Yet we continue to use them. Because they have become our main communications/communities.
This raises another question.... why aren't they brought in under Public Utilities regulations. I mean... like a phone company or a railroad? In fact, Zuckerberg and his ilk have repeatedly called for that. "Make us a public utility. Regulate us centrally and then there will be no question about our neutrality."
Right. The public utilities board that will be appointed to oversee them won't at all be loaded from the get-go with far leftists and others who WANT a regulated utility as a government mass propaganda tool. Of course they want that! It relieves them of all accusations of bias or unfairness. "Look we are unbiased.... the Public Utilities Commission that oversees us totally says so." And if you believ that I have a bridge to sell you...
Anyway... long boring post. But the control of social media is complete and intentional and probably the ONLY way to stop it is if a couple of billion people turn off the shit simultaneously or move to a new un-moderated platform. Which doesn't exist. And probably won't. Because noone wants it. Or if it does show up, it will be called "The place for Nazi's or The place for hate speech" by the places that are "The Places for Nazi's and hate speech..." that pleases the far left.
Happy Saturday...
