Note: I'm aware of longrangehunting.com, and the threads on here (which are fairly old, for the most part.) I'm 80% sure this is my next caliber, but figgered I'd do an "info" thread here, first....

Thinking about building one from scratch. I'm pretty sure I'll go with an XLR chassis (again) and Leupold Mark4 ERT 6.5-20. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions.

What action(s) should I be looking at?

Barrels?

I like Timney triggers, but I'm open to suggestions.

Any pics, range reports, vids, suggestions, information welcome.

My build is as follows:

Blueprinted Rem 700 LA
PTG .25" Recoil Lug
Badger bolt knob
Bolt fluted by PPR (Boltfluter)
Timney trigger
20 MOA Nightforce rail pinned to the receiver
Benchmark 29" 1:9.4" Sedero contour barrel w/ muscle brake
Barreled action cerakoted black and bedded in a Manners T4
Wyatt's 4" internal mag box for running the Bergers long
Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NPR1

I was building an edge with this set up but change it to a lapua AI but here is a parts list

Stiller Tac338
jewel trigger 13oz
Mcmillan A-5a
Bartlein barrel finished at 27in 1in at muzzle spiral flutted by kampfeld and CSR 4port Break
badger rings
Will have nightforce 5.5-22x56 as soon as I buy it

forgot to add that I am running seekins 338 lapua bottom metal as well

I am looking to do a 338 Edge build.

Trued 700 LA
- 45 MOA Scope Base: my smith said if you're going to be shooting this you are looking to go far. 45 MOA will do better for my distance goals than a 20 MOA scope base.
- Jewell Trigger

Bartlein Barrel 1.35 MTU Contour
- APA Fat Bastard

I will probably go with another XLR stock.

I am building an edge also,

stiller tac 300 LA
bartlein 27"
Mc Millan A5 A with CDI DBM
All these parts are at the smith and I already have brass, bullets, powder and dies and the scope is on its way.

can't wait to pull the trigger on this one.

I did a 338 RUM last year. I read a ton of the posts on "longrangehunting" and failed to see why 2750-2800fps flies farther out of a different case. I saw several posts that said something like, "a 300gr SMK shoots farther out of my Edge when shot at the same velocity as my Ultra/Lapua/whatever". I'm still fiddling with my reloads and chronograph at the moment but I am getting similar performance to all of the usual 338 players. I noticed a lot of people comparing a 24-26" bbl of one caliber to a 28-30inch gun of another caliber and getting different results. Then they conclude a 24" bbl ultra mag is coming up 100-150fps short when compared to a 28" Edge or Lapua.

According to our friends at Wiki all of the major 338's are close;

338 Remington Ultra 113 grs of case capacity
338 Edge 110.2 grs of case capacity
338 Lapua 114.2 grs of case capacity
338 Norma Mag 107.3 grs of case capacity

Rem 700 LA-LH
Shilen 28" Heavy Varmit bbl, Shilen did the work and matte blued the whole thing.
Timney trigger, easy to install yourself and still hard to beat for the price
McMillan A1-3 stock, They are great to work with and friendly over the phone
Leupold 8.5x25LR side-focus scope, Leupold one piece base and rings

I got aluminum pillars and did not bed the action, I'll do that this summer sometime. Loading a Hornady 225gr SST to 3150fps it runs about 3/4 moa all day long. Using H-1000 I had a SD of 8fps on my outing today. I have a RL22 load that is 100fps faster but it is hot and kills cases.

Mine is as follows:

Remington 700SS action converted to single shot with the lugs lapped
Kreiger 1.25" for 10" and then straight taper to 1.10" at 30"
Bedded in a wood 40X stock
Nightforce 5.5x22x56
Jewell 1.5oz trigger
Muzzlebrakesandmore 5 port 1.25" brake
I did all the gunsmithing myself and it will shoot one ragged hole at 100yds.

My build is with the following---

Stiller Predator Long Action Left handed
20 MOA base
Jewell Trigger
Manners T4A
Rock Creek 1/9.4 AMU finish at 30 inches
RWS brake
Seekins 338 Bottom Metal

Shooting the 300 Berger Hybrids at 2875 FPS. Its dirty!!

once I can find some h1000 i'm looking forward to giving mine a try. mine is a budget built .338 edge. built off a green mountain blank finished @ 27", homemade a5 style stock with aluminum bedding pan, savage action, sss trigger, .250 lug, egw 20moa base, 12x super sniper in some xtr rings

You will want a receiver that can be setup for either a Wyatt's box mag or a Seekins DBM. The AI mags, even the CIP are a little short for this case to maximize performance. We run 300SMK's at 2930 in 30" barrels with 93gr of H1000. This is pretty much our standard load for the builds leaving the shop.

This is typical accuracy

Funny, if someone asks about loads for a lapua everyone recommends Retumbo, if someone asks about the edge all the loads are for H1000. Why is that?
I get single digit ES with my edge and retumbo. Stupid accurate-

I managed to find a pound of Retumbo to try in my Ultra mag, we will see what we get. I get single digit SD's with H-1000, not quite a consistant loads from RL-22. For some reason H-1000 has disappeared locally. About 80% of the rubes buying reloading supplies lately have never reloaded and have no intention of reloading, they peddle it on boards or hoard it for the day where they can get 30% of what they paid for it at a gun show.

it has to have the bolt of a magnum...
I did some testing sunday with the following loads in a 68cm barrel:
COL 99mm, bullet 300gr Lapua Scenar, powder Vithavouri N570:

92gr 853 m/s avg of two 3x group: 26mm
94gr 884 m/s avg of two 3x group: 21mm
96gr 911 m/s avg of two 3x group: 15mm

These were the first shots I ever fired by this rifle. Used to 30-06 and smaller, so a lot could be blamed on me.
My gunsmith buddy shot a 5mm group with the 96gr loads.

This pic shows the first three shots i fired (only these were shot on electronic targets). Sighted in by looking through the barrel. 10mm low :D

To update, I ordered my gun in 338 Norma Mag, because the only 338 Edgebrass (Bartram) I could find for it was MORE expensive than Lapua. Couldn't find 300RUM anywhere. And It'd kinda suck to buy a $5K rifle, and then not be able to shoot it for lack of brass.

The 338 Edge thread

Ive put together a short movie of a silencer ive made for my 338 edge.
First clip a friend is using it with the defensive edge brake (note his lack of bipod pressure lets the rifle hop)
(and pardon the slight douchy music  watching pictures without any music tends to get lame)

338 silencer project - YouTube

Im very pleased with the results although i havent tested the accuracy yet. The recoil is a tiny bit more noticeable, but the shooting experience is generally better. I burn 94gr of N570 powering the 300gr scenars at 880m/s, so the silencer has a tough life ahead. I think it'll hold up great.
