This marks the 9th 40X bolt handle we've had fall off. ... and I do mean fall off. This action was just laying around waiting to get a barrel put on, and in normal handling, fell off. All bolts were purchased from PT&G several years ago, and they just keep falling off. Annoying in the extreme. I remember calling them up at that time when the first 3 or so popped off, and their answer was that we should fix them. Someone was clearly sleeping in soldering class.

With the flimsy jig I rigged for my own use, I dreaded silver soldering bolt handles on back before PTG started offering one-piece bolts. Now I see they've got quite a substantial jig for holding the bolt & handle for soldering....but at the price they're asking for it, I'll just keep on buying one-piece bolts. I sent a customer's M700 bolt & handle to Dan's40X to have it TIG welded on, and that turned out very well. Would do it again if a customer brought a bolt in with a handle that had broken the silver solder joint.

Whatever - never had any of the handles that I silver soldered on come off again. I used ribbon solder & paste flux, which seems to have resulted in a very strong joint.

You seem to be confused. This is a PT&G bolt. I've NEVER had a factory remington 40X bolt fall off.

i remember reading your detailed chronology of this situation, must have been on the Scout site. This has been going on for years and IIRC, you had either written, called (or possibly both) the owner and were basically blown off.

I had what appears to be a pretty common experience with PTG where I was told "2 weeks" for a custom reamer and it ended up being 4 months and many phone calls/e-mails. I understand that custom reamer lead times are in the 3 month timeframe. What pissed me off was that I was lied too repeatedly, then they "stumble-bummed" their way through it until finally delivering. I wrote a letter to the owner, thinking it would elicit a response......crickets. I even wished him and his business well and hoped he would address the issues that were harming his reputation.

My experience with PTG leaves me with the impression that they are ambivalent toward my (and apparently, many other's) business. That's fine, there are other choices out there and I'm not inclined to further burden someone that doesn't appear to want my business. It's too bad because if PTG would clean up their act, they would tear the industry a new one. Maybe they already are, I don't know.

I have since been dealing with Dave Manson and couldn't be happier.
