Re: The right scope to buy need help

Both paper and steel on paper trying to my the smallest group possible steel love to hear that nice PING when you make that hit. I did some shopping around I like the nikon's but thinking of going all out and going with a Leupold mark 4.

Re: The right scope to buy need help

Check out SWFA's 5x20 HD SS scope. The group buy discount is over, but it's still a LOT of scope for the $ you'll spend (even at retail).

Caveat this by saying that while I bought one, I don't yet have it in hand and have no personal experience with it. I'm basing the recommendation on reviews from shooters FAR more experienced than myself.

JJ tell us a budget, the $$$ adds up quickly when it comes to scopes, my only recommendation is make sure whatever scope you get that the knobs match the reticle, MOA\MOA MIL\MIL.

Happy Birthday!

Re: The right scope to buy need help

Definitely agree with narrow your search down by some. When shooting that distance you will want a 30mm tube at least. that should provide you enough elvation travel, still, when shooting 800 yards, you will want a 15 or 20 MOA base as well. You could also go with a 0 MOA base and the Leupold Mark 4 rings with a built in 15 MOA. matching Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA is a nce feature to have, but not a must have. Ideal yes, but I have shot with 1/8 and 1/4 MOA turrets on a mil rad reticle at 800-1000 yards and done very well. Target shooting at that distance will generally require higher magnification, on the high end you will want 20-25x magnification. You mentioned the mark 4 and that would be a great choice. Leupold has a 6.5-20 that comes in a few options for turret preference that would certainly allow you to achieve your potential at that distance and farther. Another option to look at that is a very unrated scope is the Bushnell Elite 4.5-30. The Elite series is a top notch optic that has one the respect of a lot of big shots, one being Ronnie Barrett. He's even throwing Elites on his 50 BMG's now. Their glass is comparable to that of Leupold. The 4.5-30 variable range woudl certainly work from 500 yards to well over 1000 when you decide at the range one day to see how far you can go, and to still see the target clearly.

30mm tube, ideally match reticle to turret, mounts are just as important, and pick your price range, then a decision will be much easier for you. Hope this helped and steered you the right way.

Re: The right scope to buy need help

I have to agree a mark 4 is not going all out I just had a new born boy that is now in the house but I have a 1k to 2k to spend on a scope trying to get the most bang for my bucks

Re: The right scope to buy need help

The Leupold M5 are very nice way to got and very solid. The PST are also a very good way to go for the price.
