Fairly cool yesterday, around 74°. On yesterday's to-do list:

Black arc 77 Nas3
Badlands 77 shell shock
Badlands 75 shell shock
Aac 77 otm

Garmin xero chrono

The bad news-i forgot to charge my garmin and it didn't make it through all the ammo. If was also very windy so I didn't get an accuracy test in.

Good velocities but a rather large ES from these for me.

A little on the slow side but really good stats

*sigh* the 77gr load performs poorly for me from them

Dead chrono. I didn't get to test the 75's but from my previous outings with them, they had to be moving around 2650. I zeroed it and pushed them out to 400 to verify. Streloks holds where dead on using my previous data for them.

I have a new batch of Badlands coming this week that I'm going to test-they changed some powder and switched the 77's back to the smk from the hornady.

****updated**** 8/24
Sunny 85⁰

New batches of badlands 75's and 77's
Aac shell shock 77's

Whatever badlands did, it helped.

Badlands 75's 70 rounds total. Still a rather high es but those velocities are awesome
High 2799
Low 2704
Avg 2753
Es 95
Sd 24

Badlands 77's 20 rounds total. Fairly tame velocity wise but the SD and ES are drastically improved over last time. This lot used the smk and not the hornady
High 2658
Low 2602
Avg 2626
Es 56
Sd 17

Aac 77 shell shocks. 20 rounds total. Yet another aac round that actually performed super consistently, albeit a little slow.
High 2627
Low 2549
Avg 2584
Es 77
Sd 18!

2660fps with 77gr is great performance for any 5.56, let alone a 12.5”. Hornady’s 20” Service Rifle Data shows 2600-2700fps with 73 and 75gr loads.

I’ll probably never do 5.56 in anything longer than a 12.5”, unless it’s a Retro.

I’ll probably never do a Retro in 5.56 again though.

hell ain’t nuthin on the aac 77 otm. i have a 16” LWRC IC A5 that only gets 2580 with it!

by comparison a 16” FN CL with a small can does 2705 with the same ammo.

whats really slow ammo is the aac 77rg tmk. thru an LMT 12.5 piston is was 2380! while xm193 thru the same barrel is 2890

I'm not knocking the speed-its the ES that makes it not worth it to me. I'm getting very similar with black hills red box 77's (about 2640 in similar conditions) but half the es for a cheaper price.

For your high of 2727fps with 77gr, you’re...

300yds 1.1 / 0.8
400yds 2.1 / 1.2
500yds 3.3 / 1.5
600yds 4.7 / 1.9
700yds 6.3 / 2.4
800yds 8.3 / 2.9 right at supersonic threshold

For your low of 2623fps...

300yds 1.2 / 0.9
400yds 2.3 / 1.2
500yds 3.6 / 1.6
600yds 5.1 / 2.1
700yds 7.0 / 2.5
800yds 9.2/ 3.1

I was going to say it might not matter much, so I ran the numbers and it actually does. Won’t matter much within 400yds, but after that, you’re looking at vertical dispersion of .2 to .9 mils, which is no bueno.

I dont reload

That being said I'm getting 2650 from black hills red box with a low 20's sd and around a 60 es.

69 tmk's are around 2700 with a high teens SD and 50 ES

I said it earlier in the thread but the SD of all the tested loads doesn't bother me, it's that ES creating fliers (like you pointed out)

What distances do you have access to and what kinds of targets?

I’ve seen after 37 years of shooting 5.56 at distance that it’s pretty anemic once you get past 200-300yds. In clear weather with no or less than 5mph wind, it can hit the steel with enough momentum to give you nice feedback even at 700yds with some of the heavies, but where I live, you only see those kinds of conditions at night maybe when wind has died down.

I have back-breaking cases of .224” bullets of this nature, mostly 69gr SMK, 73gr, 75gr, and 77gr that I don’t see myself loading anytime soon. 69gr SMK has been very accurate for me when I was loading it.

Typically 400 on in. I occasionally have access to 800. I enjoy the challenge of shooting 556 at distance. When I move back out west I intend to push this 12.5 well past 1000

totally agree with you there. i got all excited about 500 yards shooting with 556 and then realized it was like pissing in the wind. its always breezy here in southern az and pass 400 the wind drift was stupid to adjust for on a first round. 200-300 no problem

so i adjusted my set up to a
more nimble 16”, away from the 18” heavy barrel sled

figured if i wanna shoot 400-600 i’ll use the 308. my frustration level went away. lol

that will be an experiment in physics for sure. haha. wind drift will be huge and a destabilized sub sonic bullet?

guessing a big scope is in your plans.

someday when i feel friskie i’ll get a scope i can see 1000 yards with for my 308 bolt, maybe, just for the fun of it. i have access to 1000 yards+ here around tucson but no motivation to try that yet.

let us know how that goes.

ps…i remember your posting on arf when you where trying to get out of that ME shithole-wherever it was. stay safe out there!

It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow...

Thanks dude!
