Gunsmithing The Sako extractor debate

Ive been researching this whole concept now for some time and its always been in debate,some say yes some say no. The thing is,I really like the idea and Ive kinda formed my own opinion,however my opinion is really only based on what others have to say and I think that if the sako extractor is used with factory ammo then theres little to worry about. Im kinda telling myself what I want to hear. Whats do you guys think about it when used with factory ammo only.

Ah yes the great Sako Extractor debate.

My First Rem 700 would often leave a fired case inside the gun, but i could cycle it once or twice and get it to pull the case. I had a Sako put on it and haven't had any trouble out of it s.

Current competition gun is a factory extractor and havent had any trouble out of it yet either.

I have had no issues with Sako or factory extractors.

My current position is if it ain't broke I will spend my money on boolits and powder.

This is my take on the extractor. I firmly believe the bad press comes from the installation not being done "correctly". It is important when doing the conversion to bush the bolt face and re-machine it to the proper dimension before cutting the slot for the extractor. There are those that refuse to do this and it leaves the bolt face uncut and with a huge gap between the cartridge case head and bolt. The very good reason for doing this is to, one, change to a positive extractor, two, to change to a different bolt face size and, three, to repair an obsolete bolt extractor to a serviceable condition.

I have done literally hundreds of these.

I was looking at a video that a guy posted on Longrangehunting.com,he did it the way you describe. He used a silver solder paste with built in flux,this looks like a good way to do it. Id like to use the paste type silver solder.What type would you recomend for this.

Just buy a Howa, Sako or Tikka to start with! Why would you bother with a Remington?

And for original question, i have 2 Remington 700's 1/sako + 1/reg extractor, never had an issue with either. I don't think i would spend the extra money for sako style extractor.

Manners - Make stocks for Howa & Tikka

Roedale - Make a chassis for Tikka & Howa to use AI side stocks

What more do you want? And before you ask I have owned a Remington. Only for a very short time as it had feeding problems, after two trips to the importer for repairs I sold it!
This was a NEW rifle; I have had no problems with Sako, Tikka or Howa.

The only reason Im so interested in this is because Im getting requests from guys to carry out this alteration on there Remmys. I dont ask questions,I just do what they ask. Remember,the customer is always right even if it seems rediculous to you and me. I want to be sure before I go ahead that Im not going to end up with a whole load of lawsuits pending. I totally agree with your point though.

Pat M was implying that no aftermarket stocks are available for Howa, Sako or Tikka.

If the standard Remington extractor is working well, why change it. If your customers want a bolt with that style of extractor, buy that rifle.

Just saying that very other day a nice priced stock, moa rails, trigger, etc for a Remington 700 shows up on the Hide.

Not knocking Howa, Sako or Tikka at all.
