Folks who repeat that Ukraine nuke argument, overlook the important caveat, nukes might have been parked in Ukraine but the keys were always in the Kremlin. Tactical nukes were moved to Russia ASAP after the soviet union fell . ICBM warheads were converted into nuclear fuel that still powers US nuclear powerplants to this day.
The base fear everyone held was Ukraine would sell the nukes to whomever came along like they did everything else. Lord of war shopping center was Ukraine which at the time held something like worlds 3rd largest arms arsenal.
Without US and Russia destroying the Ukraine-based nuclear arsenal, you would probably have a dozen new nuclear-armed countries

If the keys were always at the Kremlin how could a timely response or launch on demand option have been guaranteed? Or are you referring to AFTER the relocation of the USSR?
I have heard it mentioned at that time that proliferation was possible. But a lot of the organizations that propagated that narrative were also one-worlder globalists. Who’s to say either way. I do know this, no county with several thousand nuclear weapons has ever been run up and done up like Ukraine is now.

Ukrainian president at the time Kuchma ( who actually worked at one of the nuclear missile factories in his past) estimated they would have needed 10 years and about 150-200billon $ over 10 years to refurb and maintain fully functional nuclear arsenal they inherited. Besides, at the time, US was the concerned party driving denuclearisation more than Russia that was flat out broke. Danger of loose nukes was real.

The Soviet Union stationed missiles with nuclear warheads in the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republics. In 1991, those republics became independent countries. Kazakhstan quickly decided to go non-nuclear and shipped the warheads back to Russia, which inherited the Soviet Union’s nuclear status in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Belarus followed.
Ukraine used those missiles as a bargaining chip. They got, in 1994, a financial settlement and the Budapest Memorandum which offered non-aggression assurances that Russia has now broken. They shipped the 1700 or so warheads from the missiles back to Russia and destroyed the missiles.
Ukraine never had the ability to launch those missiles or to use those warheads. The security measures against unauthorized use were under Moscow’s control. The Ukrainians might have found ways around those security measures, or they might not have. Removing the warheads and physically taking them apart to repurpose them would be dangerous, and Ukraine did not have the facilities for doing that. Nor did Ukraine have the facilities to maintain those warheads. For only one example, the tritium in those warheads has a 12-year half-life and needs to be replaced regularly.

Perhaps the Ukraine should have invested that time and money you mentioned to ensure some level of nuclear deterrent. Or maybe Russia should have added some provisions in the agreement that prohibited Ukrainian membership in NATO & the EU. As you can see the Budapest Memorandum did not work out so well, for all signatories.

But the only reason for Ukrainian neutrality there in the first place was to avoid potential war with Russia as no mater who was at the helm in Russia .Ukraine trying to enter NATO would likely mean war.

Most bar fights that I have seen were started because of a woman. She's the one that instigates it by saying, "My boyfriend will kick your ass."
That attitude doesn't change when they put on a uniform and at the front.
Also look at the numerous videos of female cops trying to wrestle a subject into submission and into handcuffs. If they don't get their asses kicked, they jump out of the way when male officers show up to finish the job.
In other words, they can talk tough when someone else's blood is spilled.
Throwing waves of bodies at Avdiivka is working, though. The Russians are slowly advancing and encircling it. The New York Times has a great article on it from yesterday or the day before with interviews with Russians who were taken prisoner. Their descriptions of what the frontline troops are having to endure and how determined the leadership is to take Avdiivka were rather shocking in their complete lack of consideration for the lives of their men.
This is not the kind of war we are used to seeing in the modern age.
