So in randomly watching historical videos while in the shop, the folks at Curiosity Stream showed me a really interesting documentary called "Fighting for Lincoln: The Wide Awake Movement."
Fascinating! I had never heard of the movement. Nor their influence or size. Nor their role in getting Lincoln nominated to the Republican ticket in 1860.
They are, basically, Antifa of the 1850's! Long before there were anarchists. Long before there were made-up Anti-Facists. The basis of the Republican Party was rooted in young people getting all seriously agitated for Slavery!
This is a short documentary from free YouTube. But the longer one is on Curiosity Stream.
And there are a couple great articles. But I can't find a single book... interesting.
I'm not a Civil War historian, so this never really crossed my transom. But as a political junkie and as a fan of how you run psychological operations, this really got me interested.
Also reminds us that when folks try and accuse Republicans of being anti-people-of-color... remember that for 150 years, the GOP has been fighting for everyone to be equally successful... not due to Marxist sharing. But due to everyone using their Natural Rights and natural talents to the best of their abilities -- on an equal playing field.
Cheers,
Sirhr
