I am going on my 3rd build in the last 3 months. I have spent countless days(4am-5pm) at my smiths. I have handled just about ever kind, caliber, make, model, etc of rifle in the modern shooting world during theses few months. Saying that here are some things I just can't figure out.
1. Why do people think becuase its a police or tatical model that it's build any different than the regualar models. A 700 action is a 700 action wether it comes off of a $400 dollar wal-mart rifle or a $1000 dollar 5-r or sendero. Same is generally true with the barrel(excluding) the 5-r. They maybe fluted or heavier contour but they were still made by the same process. I can't tell you how many people have come it with a SPS tatical and think becuase it has the word tatical on it that it will make such a great base for a build.

2. Here's where I'm gonna get flamed. What makes MC Mil's stocks so great. I have one before you start gettting in my ass. Very nice stock but don't see where it's $300-$400 in some cases better than a H&S or even a (here we go) B&C.

3.What actual purpose does an oversized recoil lug serve???

4. Why would anyone spend the money to build a custom rifle and then not handload for it?

Thanks for your time.

1. Inexperience/uneducated.

2. They are better, stiffer, options, adj cheekpieces, etc. You'll see the light someday, maybe another 3 months at the smiths.

3. None

4. TacOps

On your number one.
1. I do not understand why people spend the money on truing rem actions. By the time and money put into rem to true it you could pay for custom action.

2.I actually like the McMillan b/c of the outer shell. Not paint needed. If you get that model.

3.I second jason. None

4. Time is big factor, but also liability ( at least with LE )

I am gonna load for my tacops when it comes bc I can't keep throwing retarded money for FGMM every time I want to shoot. I can just do my best to replicate the factory load.

Re: Things I don't understand???

in relation to your response for number #1

Variety is the spice of life... wouldnt it be crap if remington only made the 700 in an SPS tac model? Some like thinner barrels whilst some like the moderate/heavy police barrels.

Living in australia i can safely say that over here buying a custom action isnt as easy as it is for you guys over in the US. We just dont have the market here for people wanting a full custom rifle.

So for us anyway, we look at from the point of view of paying a little bit more to begin with and get something thats a little bit nicer in our own eyes.

Im happy with my 700P purchase, sure i could have gotten an SPS tactical, but the two just arent the same. Sure they may shoot similar but they arent the same.

Its like sex. Same same but different between girls.

Re: Things I don't understand???

1. Most people buying firearms know very little about firearms and are, therefore, susceptible to advertising and puffery. How many noob questions ask about starter rifles and get a PSS or 5R response, when a good used M700 Varmint in .308 would serve as well or better. Some people are just too smart to be helped.

2. Track record, longevity, proven quality, customer service - truly an "industry standard."

3. Hypothetically, if fitted snugly to the barrel tenon, it provides that much more support for the barrel and that would have some worth with a real heavy like an AMU/MTU contour. In practice, well they sure look good.

4. See response to #1.

Whereabouts is Crowville? Who is your 'smith? There are several in LA.
