I've heard of a few problems with the 22 A .One of the went full auto. I'v got a Ruger 22/45 and have had good luck with it. Cleaning it takes some getting used to but other than that it shoots good.

Browning Buck Mark is a real nice .22, my choices would be between that one and the Ruger 22/45. The MarkII is just ugly IMO. Had a Walther P22 and the day I sold it at a loss was one of the happiest in my life.

i have the S&W 22a, shoots well and i don't have too much of a problem with it feeding, it is an accurate pistol, and has some weight to it, which gives it a "big caliber" feel.
it's a little odd looking in some aspects, and the magazine release is in an odd spot (center forward in grip), which makes it off doing quick action drills or tactical reloads.
there is a little plastic square "buffer" that goes into the slide, it's good to get a few extras, they are cheap. it has a nice set of rear sights, although the front one are permanent, i'd prefer a removable one for adding fiber optics.
it has an integrated scope rail for mounting optics / red dots.
but it is pretty darn accurate and i havn't had a problem with it. all in all pleased with it's performance.

Just some food for thought. I have a Beretta mod. 87 Target which I absolutely love. It's very accurate, shoots any ammo I feed it with very few misfires and super fun to shoot. It just feels like a real handgun in your hand. Is great for plinking, target practice or any of the action / plate games.

My brother in law has a Buck Mark and its definately a shooter if I didn't own the Beretta I would not hesitate to get a Browing Buck Mark.

No matter which you choose I recommend copper washed bullets with a fairly round nose. Sticky lubes, truncated cone, or large hollow points are often the causes of feed problems.

-Go with the Smith, I love mine. I have never had a problem with it, it will eat up cheap ammo, if you feed it the good stuff it is quite accurate.

You could also go with An Advantage Arms conversion if you have a glock. But DO NOT shoot Hyper velocity ammo through it. I had two guys have theres go auto, yes auto. Read Advantage Arms manuel it states clearly not to use it in the conversion.

I love my 22a, but if i could do it again, i would have gotten the buckmark, looks much better and feels better.

Don't think I mentioned this, but the factory trigger pull on the Buck Mark is a thing of beauty although some people still opt for a trigger job.

Very happy with my Ruger MKII 22/45.... Very accurate, dependable, and rarely gets a good cleaning! As with most of these, they seem to shoot better with some fouling....

Love my sig mosquito but it is really picky on ammo, the only ammo that it feeds reliably with is CCI mini mags high velocity. JUst keep a small oil bottle with yuu and after a hundred rounds or so put a small drop in the lubricating hole and shes good to roll for awhile. Mine is very accurate and fits my hands like a glove. my .02

SW 22A is not bad. I still got the 5" slabside barrel model for plinking . The trigger is fine and it shoots with good accuracy also.
For High-Vel. ammo I cant tell you . I only shoot subsonics in it & Mine eats 40 grn. and functions flawless but does not cycle well with 38 grn. Subs.
The top of Slide full rail with Sights is nice also when a Suppressor is put on the barrel because the iron sights are way clear with the Can out of view.
Only complaint . Trigger Guard is shitty. The 22A trigger guard is sharp around the edge where your middle finger comes in contact when grabbing around the grip . It will give you a blister in a day of shooting. Just a quick file job to that area of he guard fixes it fine. But I don't mind putting a File on it because it is a cheep-$ .22 shooter.
22A , It's a good cheep .22 plinker & will do you fine. The Buckmark is too .
The Buckmark does look nicer to the Eye. They are .22 eye candy and I like it's looks . I do like it's trigger better for out the box over the SW 22A .
For break-down and cleaning. I like the Buckmark and SW 22A both, way more than the Ruger models for break-down and re-assemble after cleaning .
Between the SW 22a , Ruger or the Buckmark . I would get the Buckmark 1st choice . Some luv the Ruger's but I never cared for them . I would take a Buckmark over a Ruger anyday of the week. ( imho ) Buckmark kicksAss over the Ruger's. So the 22A is #2 choice for me .

Threading a Buckmark. I can not tell you about the Buckmark as I never took a barrel off to Thread . for me. 1 big Plus+ for the SW22A is that the Barrel does disassembles off for Quick-Easy Thread job on the muzzle for a Can . it was easy for me to do & threading. also Slab-Side is no biggie either over Round barrel .

get a buck mark. there is a model to fit any need and shooter . fact is the buckmark is better quality than the smith or the ruger . i had a smith for a while , it is a good gun for the money , ruger is also good , just not the quality of the buck mark .

sorry....neither get a ruger mk2 government...box stock they were shooting 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards all day long....if you cant find one get a slab side.

I have had them all (still have 3 Rugers and a Buckmark) and I prefer them in this order:
Ruger
Browning
S&W
All of the shoot quite well and are reliable with ammo they like. If you do get the Smith, do not dry fire it for any reason.

unless looking for a dedicated .22 pistol, i'd have to believe that getting a conversion unit (if available) for a present centerfire handgun owned would be a good way to go as you can still use the same holsters, have the same grip and muscle memory to the operating controls, and acts as an overall economical trainer.
plus in a few seconds, can convert back over to centerfire, essentially bringing two pistols at the same time.

I handled the S&W 22 and the buckmark and the Ruger. Did not like the S&W and the deciding factor for me between the Ruger and the Buckmark was the feel of the pistol. The Buckmark pistol with the URX grips won hands down. Pretty damna accurate at 25yds and shoots anything you feed it so naturally it gets bulk ammo from walmart all day.

I hate to agree with the above post on a conversion kit. I have a 22 conversion kit for my kimber ... it was worth every penny. Subs, depending on brand and fps don't cycle it the best, but bulk pack ammo works fine. Great for shooting paper and double-tap drill will tip steal inside of 25 yards usually. The muscle memory is also a plus.

I owned a Buckmark a long time ago. After cutting grass, etc. it was my firearm purchase (with the help of Dad) and first pistol. He gave me a MKII a few years later and today I only have his MKI, my MKII, and a Kimber conversion in .22 semi.
My Buckmark was slab sided, plastic grips, adj. sights, w/either a 5 or 6" barrel. It was what I guess would be considered an 'early' Buckmark today.
My Rugers are more reliable but that could be due to the Browning I had not having all the bugs worked out. I've actually been fighting the urge to pick up a new Browning (more of a nostalgia thing then an actual need).

I have owned and shot a number of 22 pistols. Of the 2 that the OP mentioned, I would get the buckmark. The buckmarks that I have shot have been very accurate and reliable.
I would avoid the P22. Mine was super picky on ammo and no where near as accurate as my buckmark.
But to throw another one out there to look at, I would consider finding a used S&W 422 or 622. My experience with these pistols has been very positive. The are very accurate, can be used with factory 12 rd mags, will digest any ammo I feed them, have a factory threaded barrel, and the barrel is low in the frame (so a suppressor does not block your sight picture).

I have a Colt Woodsman. It has been in pretty much constant use since purchased by my grandfather in 1937. Carried to two wars. Still shooting great. I have all the parts that have been replace due to wear. ( barrel, grips, sear and some mags worn out). Along with the original box papers etc. I doubt there has been any period of time in it's life it was not shot in a 30 day period by my grandfather, father or me one. Not a spec of finish left when I first saw it in the early 60's. At 73 yrs of use it is still the best woods gun I have.

The 22/45 that I have will hit 185y shots on a 24" round steel plate at 200y with open sights. Not rested, that's me standing there and a spotter watching til I get on target. After I found the dope, it was repeatable for several magazines before I got bored with it.
Clark Custom Guns in TN will rework it and blueprint the action and guarantee a 1" group at 50y from a rest, I haven't done it yet, but I am thinking about having that done to my MK 2 "Government Model" that has the 7+ inch barrel.

I concur with the Walther P22 statement.. Mine is really finicky, only likes certain ammo, and has other little quirks I dont like.

I agree completely. I have a gov't bull and a slab side. The full bull just looks cooler... makes a nice fit for a suppressor on the nose too!

I agree completely. I have a gov't bull and a slab side. The full bull just looks cooler... makes a nice fit for a suppressor on the nose too!

IMHO
I have had several 22 pistols.
MkII rugers were great, they fire forever with minimal maintenance, and the can be used to drive tent stakes

This statement doesn't make sense to me, since the Ruger is designed with the same grip angle as the 1911... that was the entire point of the 22/45 model. It retains 100% of the location, angle, and size of the 1911 grip feel.
