I shot two F class matches last year, and a few so far this year. All have been 300 meters. I have used my LWRC REPR with Leupold Mark IV 6.5-20, but I want to upgrade that rig.

I have already acquired a Sig SSG 3000 through a trade with a friend. Now I need mounts and optics.

I am considering the NF 8-32 or 12-42 BR models, probably with the CH-3 reticle. I am leaning towards the 12-42. While most of my shooting will be at 300 meters, I may do some at 600 meters. I doubt I would use the range between 8-12 very often, but I might get to use the range between 32-42. Kind of a better to have it and not need it type of thought. Your thought?

I am consdiering getting either a LaRue LT-158 or LT-104 as a mount. I like QR mounts because I am used to them. But I can also get one of these through another buddy via trade, so they won't cost me any actual cash. I like that the LT-158 has 10 MOA a down angle. Your thoughts?

I will add that this will really be a purpose built rig, pretty much solely for F-Class. I do not hunt. And for other shooting games I have the REPR or other AR's to play with.

You may find that to be reverse, you may end up using lower powers more than your 30-42 because of mirage. But I don't live anywhere near you so you would know better than I.
My Fclass match on Sunday was shot at 300 and 600yards, the mirage was worse at 300 than 600, I shot on 24 power for both, talked to another gentleman who used a Nightforce NXS and he used 22 power and wished he had gone lower. ( I run a Sightron SIII 8-32x56)

Hard to go wrong with a Nightforce, isn't hard to see that given their reputation. Just give the mirage some thought, don't see you having a problem with the 12-42 though, 12 power should be plenty low if mirage is bad.

Re: Thinking of getting optics & mounts for F-class

I have a problem with mirage with anything over 20X. I think a good scope range would be 4-20X but have not seen that range. I have not seen everything as far as scopes go. Just my onion.

If you are staying at 300 and 600, and want a NF, the 5.5-22 will be fine. I shoot mine in F/TR out to 1000. I did recently acquire a 8-32 to experiment with, but I have never felt handicapped by the 5.5-22. As mentioned, you want the option to reduce the magnification when the mirage starts playing tricks with you.

Re: Thinking of getting optics & mounts for F-class

Get the 12-42 if you go with the BR Nightforce. If the mirage gets bad, back it down. If it is a dedicated F-class gun, you will eventually shoot farther where higher magnification is an advantage. Take a look at what competive shooters(guys who are winning matches) are using before purchasing and you will save a lot of grief in the long run.

When the guy that designs/makes some of the best mounts in the industry tells you something about mounts, take the advice.

Re: Thinking of getting optics & mounts for F-class

I've found that I can rarely use over 15-20x in humid Southern MO. Mirage is simply too bad for higher magnification scopes. Going out west pdog blasting, I've found 20-25x is useful on very, very small targets.

So before buying, take into consideration the environment which you'll be using your scope.
