I just sent my barreled action to him to start the new stock build, so I need to move this one. This one is used but I just wet sanded it and refinished it with Auto clear coat for the next owner. Its nice because if you ding it you can always re-sand it and shoot it again! I had Jim Cloward look at my M70 after getting a McGee stock, he told me what was wrong and that was the issue - (4th round not loading).
Jim's a heck of a Winchester guy!
I've seen his trophy room too, simply amazing...

My buddy tells me it was $1800 roughly , start to finish from a blank to what you see.

And worth every penny spent. Actually no, not for my buddy - probably not for the average person since this is winter. I'm sure during shooting season it might be a longer wait...

Nice to see Mr. Cloward is still at it. Lost track of him when he closed his shop in Seattle. Heard he landed up north somewhere. I have a .308 he built on a Norinco receiver. Oversize stock. Glass trigger. Bought it several years ago, when I was toying with High Power shooting. Eyes and budget conspired to derail those plans. I should sell the dang thing, but it is so much fun on those rare days when I get to play that I find myself coming up with more reasons to hold on to it. Maybe that'll change as the next High Power season approaches. Would be a fine piece for someone to start with.

If you have never seen Jim's work in person, pictures barely do it justice!
A lot of the western / northwestern palma shooters have stocks done by him and to say that they are spectacular is an understatement!
That being said, there are many people around doing wonderful work like this all over the country that you have never even heard of.

Actually he moved a little north to Machias, very close to the 500 yard range where he is still involved in holding matches on a regular basis.
I have a few really nice ones he did for me. Will post pictures when I get a chance, but he is one of a kind.

I really like the fancy wood finishes. I like them so much that's why I had a set of panels dipped for my Infidel to look like fancy walnut. Maybe sometime I could get someone to make a set of real walnut pieces for it!

I went to his house after a match when my buddy was picking up his palma rifle - HUGE room showcased with every animal you can imagine, Lions, etc....
Good guy though, had him look at my Winchester a few years back - the man is a legend..

As promised, here is another one of Cloward's handy work. Too bad that I have only shot it a couple of times and have not shot in more than 15 years!
Used to shoot sling with scoped rifles back then. This one's in .308 Baer. Cloward did the stock, Baer did the gunsmithing. Ebony and ivory accents, plus checkering. By the way, Cloward is a master "checkerer".

I've fondled and shot many of John's rifles and every one of them is artwork...
John's a great shot, puts me to shame! Except with pistol at long range - I think that's the only thing I beat him at....

My Any/Any LR rifle, red and black Bernosky (Cloward design) stock, Brux 30" hvy Palma contour 1-8.5" twist chambered in .284 Win. Cloward did the barrel work and bedding. It is not a true Cloward rifle, but was duplicated by Carl Bernosky, with Clowards permission. Center is my brand new, gorgeous english walnut Cloward stocked 6mmBR, 30" light Palma contour 1-7.5" twist Benchmark barrel. Benchmark did the barrel install. I have about 600 rds through it (while in another stock) and it is a hammer. Last is my blue and black laminate Cloward stocked Palma rifle, .308 Win of course. 30" medium Palma contour 1-13" twist Krieger tight bore. I finished the laminates, with help from a buddy who owns an auto body shop who provided the clear coat. The blue and black stock was the first colored laminate Mr James Cloward roughed out. I heard about "blue dust" flying around his shop for months.

OK So those of you that remember me looking for my old Winchester rifle - John's the one that did all the finishing and clear coat on *MY* stock.
This was a McGee stock, the ONLY one of it's kind as the other 3 blanks went to palma style stocks.
(PS I want that rifle back!)
