The outdoors is not for everybody. You just can't slap some brand name hiking boots and backpacks on random white collar folks who have lived in cities all their lives and suddenly expect them to conquer trails and ascend peaks. No. You'd get folks killed VERY quickly like that. An entirely new mentality have to be adopted before one can successfully become a true outdoors person and no, having walked all of Central Park and even fought off a couple of muggers here and there won't cut it either. When you are in the REAL wilderness, EVERYTHING is out to kill you, plain and simple. From weather to every species of fauna. 63°F may seem like a pleasantly chill summer night to most people but try overnighting it with soaked clothes and trying to squeeze a nap under the stars between walking. You can develop hypothermia in no time. And the first hint that you are in BIG trouble is when you know that the temps are in the 60s the whole night but yet you are shivering and feeling like you are coming down with the worst flu you ever caught. No. Your senses are not tricking you, nor are you imagining it. Basic thermodynamics at work. And it is how thermal spotting technology works. Your body heat is rapidly bleeding off into a much larger volume and lower temperature ambience and you might die if you cannot locate help soon. That example alone is just to show just how dangerous it can be for someone who is not prepared mentally and physically for such challenges.
This is what they call team building? Losing track of a teammate for even 1 second is bad enough in some venues, let alone a none outdoor type that long in that type of A/O. Where was the instructor/counselor while this FNG was first getting separated?![]()

Exactly, leadership is best learned in a foxhole not a boardroom.Too many “Team Building” exercises are just ways to fuck with folks minds. If you don’t fit in the hive mentality, they are trying to weed you out by making you cry. (And thus be embarrassed and shameful). If you cry enough they will give you a big group hug but if you continue to cry, you’ll get the boot.
In the end, it works, it really builds a team,(?) If that kind of a team is what is wanted. In reality, one or two bully the rest and really fuck up the works. (Which I suppose is the point)
Want to find out what REAL Team Building is that Really Builds a TEAM. Join the US Army or US Marines and volunteer for the infantry. You’ll get a double dose of basic and with any luck get drill instructors that know what they are doing. Esprit de corps will become a way of life in the team. Best men I ever worked for was the TEAM of Officers and Drill Sargents in Infantry. (My basic instructors were damned decent men as well). In the Vietnam era, these men knew where we were heading and did their best to get us ready without trying to make crybabies out of us. (Tough but with understanding)
That is my experience. Outside of basic and Advanced Infantry, I stay away from “Team build shit.” Your milage may vary.

I recall just sort of floating around being non-committal and answering all questions as vague as possible. 1979 pretty much cured me of ever volunteering for much of anything for the rest of my life and I detest being coerced into ANYTHING. I have several people I won't speak to ever again, I hate coercion that much. Manipulation is real close second.I wonder if this was one of them “mandatory” company outings. Like the mandatory company picnics.
“Stay clocked in and head over to the park” I tried to get lost but it never worked. Lol
