What are your thoughts?

I have owned several .223 ARs and just bought a 6.8 Upper for hogs and maybe Doe hunts.

If I enjoy it I will be looking at putting a Grendel together and trying it out.

Regards

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

I build these guns and own several(ok a little more than several), but the 6.8 I think for what you are doing is a great round, it has lots of energy and if your shooting under 300/400yds then you don't have to worry about the lack of a precision round. Killing hogs and small to medium deer is what this caliber is designed for with the energy that it delivers.

On your future build, the 6.5 Grendel(264lbc) is my favorite because of the energy, wind drift and drop. The performance is excellent. Especially in a small framed(.223) AR15.

Good luck on your new upper and hunting.

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

I too have several 6.8mm rifles (LWRC M6A2 and an AR Performance Upper) and use them for hunting deer. I have taken four deer with:
110 Nosler Accubond
110 Barnes TTSX
110 Sierra Pro Hunter

All three rounds did their job well. The longest shot was only 120 yards but I feel I can comfortably take deer in the 300 yard range and probably a bit further if I wanted to push it. The 6.8 rounds start to lose a lot of energy in the 400-500 yard range.

The next rifle I am planning, at the moment, will be a 12.5 6.8mm SBR. That will be a lot of fun.

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

It depends on what you are getting it for. If my primary use was hunting or LE then I'd get one and use it for home defense also. But if my primary use was home defense, plinking, target shooting, I'd stick with the 5.56 as it is much cheaper to shoot and better bullets available.

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

6.8 is my new go to gun. I've hunted 2 seasons with it so far and its amazing. Most shots put deer down on the spot. Its sickly accurate and its almost overkill for deer

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

Anyone use these for Coyotes? I am building my Dad an AR and he lives in TX and keeps a Weatherby .243 on hand and it does the job well but he wants something new and he has bought me more then enough guns so I was wanting to repay the favor. He complains about his 40gr .204 in the wind so I am afraid he will have the same issues with a .223 so I was thinking about the 6.8 option. Any help would be great. Thanks Tommy

depends on the distance you are shooting. If it is going to be below 400 (that is marginal) than a 6.8 is fiine but if you are looking for longer distances I would go with a 6.5 Grendel or even a 308 platform. 6.8mm is a great round but it has distance limitations and that should be considered. It has a trajectory a lot like an AK round.

The Speer 90 Gr TNT bullets will work great for that. Try 28.6 GR of H4198 or RE7 and it will work great. I shot out to 500 yards with that load from a 14" barrel using a 6x scope in J.Boyette's class and it was great.

+1 to that! When I picked up my 6.8 three and a half years ago, the 90grain TNTs were cheaper than the other bullets in the weight range that suites the 6.8. I backed them with H335 and didn't use them on coyotes, but they'll straight detonate a jack rabbit! I need to break the 6.8 out again and do some more loading for it....I personally think it's an outstanding round!

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

Thanks Paulosantos and Saito

I have been asking questions about distances he shoots on a day to day basis and he is saying 200-300 is about the max. Every now and again he gets a 400-500 yard shot but he takes the time to take out the .300 Weatherby Mag to solve the distance issue. So I think the 6.8 build will start later this week. Got to figure out what to have engraved on the side of his lower. Thanks guys. Tommy

Re: Those of you who own an 6.8 SPC?

It is hard to beat for killing deer and hogs out to about 300yds from the AR platform. Handloading can gain almost 200fps over factory loads, 95TTSX at 3000fps is pretty deadly.

Just wondering, when you say they went public, does that mean they're available for purchase? I haven't seen them on SSA yet.

Any other places to get them?

Art was testing a few weeks ago when I talked to him so it may be a few months before they are available. Double Tap has some loaded.

ccoker, you keep saying that and teasing me with the 95 TTSX - I am still waiting by my mail box everyday so I can test them next November on some deer. I have some brand new SSA brass just waiting to test them - just sayin
