Re: Thoughts on a 10x scope's reliable distance?
Following on what Montana Marine said. And in regards to say a 1 MOA type target. On a good day, with little dust in the air, haze, or mirage, with good glass my rule of thumb is about 1.5x-2x the scope's highest magnification. On days when the light's crappy, there's weather, or stuff in the air, say .5x-.75x of the scope's top end.
With the scope you mention, odds are you'll get close to this. Better glass will make it easier. For example, I recently got to play with a 4x IOR & to get the same detail quailty that I could see with the IOR, I had to turn my Leupold Mark 4 up to 6x.
To my eyes, an SN-4 makes easy work of said sized targets out to 600m or a bit more without much trouble, even in poor light.
All of that said, within reason, it's the shooter more than the equipment. I had a stock Remington which was my first bedding job, & with a 4x Leupold & Black Hills Match ammo I was getting 1/2" groups at 200m. Unusual for a factory rifle, likely, the accuracy I mean. But the 4x did the job just fine, doubt I'd have done better with a 20x. And guys shoot out to 1000 & beyond with iron sights, have been for a century & a half.
