Rifle Scopes Thoughts on a scope

I was wandering what the general consensus is for the osprey brand of scopes.

I'm very new to all of this and am not looking to spend $1000 on a scope just yet until I finish the gun. I'm working on a tight budget and want something that will be reliable to get the job done. Most of my shooting is done within 400 yards, both target and animals.

I would recommend the Bushnell Elite 3200 10X mil/mil scope.

It is a known quantity, with a reputable company backing it up.

It would be nice to have variable power, but you will be exchanging features for better glass and better reliability. A fair tradeoff in my book.

Get a set of decent rings, Buris XTR or Weaver tactical and put them on a weaver one piece multi-slot base and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually considering the fixed power, but its one of those things that I've never owned. All my guns have variable powers and I don't know if I will like the fixed power. Ive never shot one before. Like I said in a previous post, the gun I will be putting this on is a Rem 700 SPS tactical. I really want a vortex viper, but the money just isn't there, so I was looking for a cheaper scope for the time being. I have a tasco 6-24x50 or something like that, but that scope is just so pitiful, I was looking for a little bit better. Most of my shooting winds up being target practice, but the main purpose for me getting the rifle is to hunt with. I hunt everything from squirrel to white tail deer. Most animal shots are within 200 yards. Most target practice ranges from 100-400 yards. Is a 10x fixed power scope plenty for that kind of shooting?

You may want to consider the weaver 3-10x MIL/MIL ($299) from midway or a swfa SS10x ($299). Both will give you great service and resale value. Check out the SH classifed for a used one. The bushnell 10x is good as well.

A fixed 10x is not the best medicine for hunting, I missed that in your original post.

What exactly is your budget?

You may be better off getting a 3-9x hunting scope like a Nikon or Bushnell you hold you over until you can spend some money on a good tactical scope.

You are better off getting fewer tacticool features and getting better glass and more accurate adjustments with repeatability.

Lets face it, a decent base and rings are going to set you back at least 85 bucks (the aforementioned ones).

You CAN opt for the Mueller APT scope. it is about 170 bucks, the turrets are a bit mushy but the glass is decent and Mueller customer service is top notch.

My budget is about $300, and thats not including rings and base, it will cover just the scope. I was thinking that SWFA SS 10x42 or whatever for 299. I'll be a little over after taxes, but I have a 22-250 that is a savage 12 btcss (heavy 26" barrel) which is a target shooting machine, thats basically all I use it for, and I figure that I can hand the scope down to that one once I can afford the vortex for the .308 I'm looking for.

There is nothing wrong with the SS 10x.
If your budget is 300, then I suggest you look to the weaver grand slam tactical at midwayusa.
It is a mil/mil variable power scope that is more suited to the dual purpose of hunting and target shooting. The glass is very good, the adjustments very tactile. It does NOT have a parallax adjustment though, just turn the power down if you are shooting inside 50 yards.

I've been rolling with the SWFA 10x42 with side focus and its been a great scope for the money. I know how you feel about saving up for the Vortex, I'm in the same boat. The SS hasn't let me down and I think you'll be happy with it. It is mil/moa and if you plan on using the the mildots it's much better to get mil/mil or moa/moa. If that isn't a concern, then the SS is your scope.

To be honest, I want to eventually get into shooting longer distances with the mil dots, but it is not a priority as of yet, and now I'm all confused again because that weaver looks good too

. Is the glass any better on the SS?
