Thoughts on MDT chassis?

I have a Tikka CTR in an HS3. I really like the flat bottom as it makes perching the chassis on flatter obstacles easy. Works great in a PIG saddle as well.

I have done some mods to allow the use of MPA rotating barricade stops as well as mounting a picatinny rail on the bottom. The one shortcoming of the chassis for me was the lack of a guard on the magazines, so I added that too. I can post pictures of the mods if you want.

What else do you want to know?

First lesson learned in this exercise - a place with both "precision" and "grinding" in the name is not precise, but they can grind things.

After making a mess with my first attempt I did the following:

1) Pulled the plastic side covers off (a few screws each)
2) Punched out the rolls pins holding on the 1-1/4" x 1" rectangular tube and flipped it over (this gives you a blank underside as opposed to the drilled and tapped original - note that the side rail holes will now no longer be visible)
3) Had said shop make me an angled piece of aluminum to guard the magazine. I attached it with JB Weld and the action screw goes through it and secures it and the action, so I am confident it is a solid connection.
4) Attached a 1/4" piece of aluminum bar stock to the underside again with JB Weld. Drilled a series of 1/4" holes with two smaller holes in the mix to mount an MDT pic rail immediately in front of the magazine guard. This allows me a lot of bipod mounting options.
5) Drilled and tapped the front for a few Magpul MLOK goodies - rail and sling stud.

Also on a whim ordered a knockoff side AR folder from China and it is working very well with the MDT skeleton stock. The length of the Tikka bolt means some form of extension is required or the bolt will not be removable with the stock in place.

This is is almost exactly how I want to setup my wife's HS3.
Shes running a r700 300blk and I want to add a plate for a RRS tripod head. Since RRS doesn't make them for the HS3, what do yois think would be the best most strong way to put a plate ? I'd rather not put a pic rail. I was thinking of using the pre existing holes and adapting a RRS plate such as the VR76

I think the VR76 is going to be your best bet. The hole spacing on the bottom of the HS3 is the Magpul MOE standard L3 from the 7-slot panels (see link), which is a really weird 1.6" that works with absolutely nothing else in the history of mankind. With the VR76 you will have three solid mounting points (2x 3/8" and 1x 1/4") so all you'll need to do is drill and tap. I used a buddies drill press and some patience and had great results. The fore-end is 1/8" thick aluminum, so not a ton of meat for mounting, but with three bolts I'm sure you'll be fine.

I think the HS3 is a sleeper hit with the ease of modifying and the low price.

Also what model is your folding adapter ?

So, it embarrasses me to admit this, but it is a cheap AliExpress folder that knocks off the Law Tactical folder. It even has the Law Tactical markings, which I thought I was avoiding when I picked the particular seller I used.

I hate that I sent money to IP thieves, but I was unable to find a single other option that was reasonably affordable and easy to source in Canada where I am. (MDT makes one that converts to a straight up carbine attachment point, which wouldn't work.)

So far it seems to be holding up. It's not necessary for some actions (R700 SA I think is fine) but since the T3 has a long bolt, it wouldn't work. They are on to Gen 4 of the buttstock, so it might be worth a call to see what your options are with your particular setup. That said, now that I have a folder, I would probably never get a chassis without one as I like a really high comb height and it makes cleaning a nightmare.

I have the my Remington Seven in an HS3 and it works great and really improved the rifles accuracy I use the Hera folding adapter with MDT buttstock and it works very well, my only complaint is that the folding mechanism will not lock on the folded position so I have to secure it

I'd like to see a picture of that setup if you don't mind.

Ooooo that mag guard mod looks sweet. I've been running an HS3 with my Rem7 in .308 for a couple years and I love it. I enjoy the flat bottom for barricades and whatnot, it's relatively lightweight for the price point, the machining in it was great, and I've never had any issues with it.

I won this MDT chassis at a match and was really excited to go try it out so I put a prototype carbon barrel on it to test it out. I absolutely loved it! This setup in particular would be excellent for a female shooter; it's really lightweight yet balanced incredibly well.

Wow, that really is slick!

On a side note, the MDT guys are great to deal with. I used their support email system once and within hours ON THE WEEKEND the president of the company himself was emailing me about my issue. You really cannot get better customer service than that. They are also big supporters of PRS in Canada, having donated a bunch of stuff to the prize table at the first official PRS match here last year.

Can't say enough nice things about MDT.

I agree completely! They were great people to deal with and replied promptly to all emails. I've been seeing more of these chassis certificates on the prize tables recently and I hope to see more; I think shooters will really like them!

I have since ditched the side folder as the length of pull with it was way too long and it was beginning to develop a wobble. I'm trying not to run any spacer between the chassis and the buttstock, so I'm going to try to MacGyver (the original series!!!) a solution to allow me to pull the bolt without yanking the buttstock.

More to follow when I figure that out.
