Thoughts on Surgeon Scalpel

Hey guys, I'm purchasing a scalpel from surgeon in .308 and was wondering if anyone has anything positive or negative to say. I've searched the forum and didn't really see anything so I figured I'd ask.

My only experience thus far is with AI chassis's so this will be pretty new to me.

You should love it. The Surgeon action is very well built and smooth operating.
The single best thing about them may just be the folks at Surgeon Rifles.

Took the words right out of my mouth, they are some of the best actions available and should hold up to anything you could ever through at it, also Preston is very polite and eager to help out a customer.

Thanks guys, I tried to do my research and it came down to GAP or Surgeon. Both which are awesome might I might add, but thanks for the extra reassurance.

GAP is currently building a rifle for me using a Surgeon action. Now, I would've wanted Surgeon to build the rifle for me but they discontinued accepting custom rifle build orders, which sucks ass. Their current focus is to build rifles and put them up for sale in hope that they will sale no matter what. And what I've seen so far not selling them isn't an issue. In the end, GAP is more personalized/custom with a great reputation for producing outstanding rifles, but Surgeon also has a proven track record, sans the personalized/custom features of your choice. So, yes, find a Surgeon rifle that stands close to your preferences and buy it with confidence. You'll be very happy that you did.

I have had mine now for about 6 mos. and am impressed every time I pull the trigger. This rifle is built battle tough and the 591 action is incredibly rigid. Mine loves 168/175 SMK's loaded in Lapua brass with 43 grains of RE15.
Crazy Accurate.

Get one from Surgeon ready to ship page. There is something about there warranty if the rifle is built by anyone else. Gap will back there build as well, but I would recommend the woodland Mcm A5 308. Now that is what I like.

Thats exactly what I purchased. Mcm,A5,308,jewell. Now I just have to get my hands on it, the USO mounted and get it broken in and I'll be set. I may go with the 168's and see how she performs.

I did the S&B 4-16X42 with seekins low rings. It is the best set up I have used so far. I picked it over AW, Crusader, Spec builds, etc.

I buy Gold Medal Match by the case (168g). Check your barrel twist and try the 175s from Federal. I would not use hand loads to start.

Yeah, you're in a good set up. I have a GAP built with the 591, it's a tack driver.

You guys are killing me!!!!!!!!! All this talk and I don't have my new baby. Now I'm really anxious to get my hands on the the scalpel to see what she can do. Not hand loading at the moment, but will be soon.

I had wanted a BO M2008 for my custom rifle i plan on getting built in a two or three years. I recently changed my mind to have a surgeon. My idea of it, will be bedded in a KMW sentinel, jewell trigger, haven't decided on barrel, and chambered for a 6.5Lr.

So for you surgeon owners, how smooth is the bolt travel? Can you compare it to something for me. The smoothest action i've ever laid hands on was my Sako 85. I haven't ever messed with any custom actions though.

PGS and BgBmBoo excellent shooting and rifles. My best groups at 100 don't match those lol.

TerryG has apoint.... If you do not load yourself or want to see what your rifle is capabale of without load-testing start with FGGM 168's. When I am feeling lazy and want to feel good about myself, I just dip into the old factory stash. I have a Scalpel with 24" barrel with 1:11.25" twist. Enjoy.

Hey Blackops.
The Surgeon actions are pretty smooth (I own two) but not as smooth as the Sako/Tikka actions. Remember these are mainly designed for tactical rifles and function is the main focus.

If you watch my video above....and check out my other videos...I have a few posted on YouTube of the Scalpel and my other Surgeon action rifle...you will see the bolt manipulation is smooth and linear.

I am sure you would/will be very happy with a Surgeon rifle.
