Sidearms & Scatterguns Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

Thousand dollar piece of plastic that becomes a frag grenade when an out of battery discharge occurs, and has the ergonomics of a jagged cliff ledge, shooting a .22wmr class cartridge at almost 2x the cost......what's not to like?

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

The ergonomics are piss poor.

Handling the gun feels like picking up a Walmart bb gun, slide is rough and not smooth at all, texture on grips was lousy, everything is oversized to be able to fit the 20-rd mag in the grip. Controls are very weak and need to be extended much more.

^ The ones I've handled have all been USG models.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

I have one, like it, and it's a fun gun to shoot. The only downside is ammo cost - about $22/50. Regarding ergonomics, if you have small hands, it may not be the gun for you. I have fired well over 3000 rds through mine with no KaBooms. I handload, but NOT 5.7x28. BTW, I have also seen the results of AR KaBooms, and people still shoot ARs . . . but then again, it was the internet . . .

Read the following:
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=276542&Number=3150234

. . . and scroll down to my post.

Another internet legend regarding Five-Seven OOB & KaBooms. All Five-Seven KaBooms have been traced back to reloads. The Five-Seven is a straight blow-back design, making it sensitive to powder burn rates & pressure. If the case extraction commences too soon, the the unsupported (no longer in chamber) pressurized case explodes, making a hand-held grenade.

Bottom line: The pistol works as designed and is safe with factory ammo.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

I did a little reading on this too today the photos of the destroyed five seven had double chage written all over them.

This gun is so interesting to me. Such a great design and yet so many hate it. I was looking at one in the shop and the more I study the thing the more interested I get. Still kicking it around, the grip texture bothers me a little, not so much the ergos, it points like a beretta 92, which I got used to a long time ago. Love the safety, love the barrel/spring assembly. Trigger isn't bad. Lock up seems good, I don't know looks like it would be a ton of fun on a prairie dog field or maybe a really good plinking range.

Made me chuckle a little lol

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

Ok so the 5.7x28mm is reloadable but then your gun will likely explode in your hand...and the reload figures don't even match up to .22WMR so we come full circle to the fact that .22WMR is still nearly half the cost of 5.7x28mm and so the idea of 5.7 being cost effective by handloading is moot. If you want a 30-50gr bullet to move faster than 1600fps may I introduce you to 5.56x45mm? FN's belgian .22 just doesn't seem to be very practical in any sense.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

You aren't reading, Jarhead.

It is a reloadable .22 Mag. That is full of win, and the factory ammo costs will be negated after the third, or so, reloading of the brass.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

"For some gun gurus, the Five-SeveN is the handgun equivalent of the world’s most fire-proof paper hat. It’s a brilliant technical achievement but who cares? For one thing, you’re more likely to find Keira Knightley at Country Buffet than a box of 5.7×28mm ammo at K-Mart. For another, firing-off a hundred rounds of Five-SeveN ammo costs more than draining a particularly good bottle of Scotch. As for the weapon itself, you can buy two Springfield XD’s for the price of one of FN’s strangely-chambered pistols. Did I mention that the Five-SeveN’s safety sits on the side of the gun’s barrel? Or that the grip is longer (end-to-end) than War and Peace? All of which makes the Five-SeveN a novelty gun for impressing range rovers who Glock around the clock. Right?" - Robert Farango

He likes the cartirdge in the Ps90, its not a cartridge issue....

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

..at least until it blows up in your hand. But hey, go ahead. Just be a decent chap and post pre and post surgery pics for us. I'm trying to expand my collection of exploded Five seveN pics and the more handloaders messing with the belgian .22 the better. Hell I even save the 5.7 brass so I can give it to darwin award candidates.

I've owned a FiveSeven for about a year. I find it very comfortable to hold and shoot. It is a lot of fun to shoot just like my PS90. Very little recoil. I use the gun for occasional CCW as well. I have installed an EFK Firedragon threaded barrel to shoot suppressed through my SS Sparrow suppressor. I also use the T-6 ammo from Elite Ammunition as my CCW round.

I see several popping up for sale locally.
The 5~7 and the S&W 500 magnum both.

The 5~7 is a disappointing caliber no matter the platform its stuffed into and once people buy it and fire it I think the novelty wears off and they look to sell it.

The .500 mag is similar but most used ones for sale have a few burn rings and usually am almost full box of ammo with it.

If you want a zippy handgun round buy a CZ52 and use that extra cash for 7.62 Ammo.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

Ive got mine in my right hip pocket now. Love the gun. The safety is under my trigger finger. The best location except for the 1911.Accurate and fun to shoot.Got the dies ,etc. to load but have not yet. Not concerned about reloads for it any more than the other 30 calibers I load. It was featured in a chopsocky movie so I tracked it down. A bottle neck pistol cartridge. Never saw one before. If you're concerned about cost, may I suggest you get a different hobby.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

I used to own one. It was really fun to shoot, and expensive too. I sold it when I realized that the good ammo is restricted to LE or military, and the round I ended up with was not much different than a 22 magnum.

I assume you are looking for a practicality out of it.

for prairie hunting etc, how about a PMR-30? this will do too of course.

I was inthe same boat as you, except I want something JUST for un. so I'm looking at a desert eagle instead... about the same price, except it's so much more fun to shoot. and oyu can praire hunt with that too

Saying that a Desert Eagle is more fun to shoot than a FiveseveN is like saying that having a jackhammer up your butt is more fun than your girl's tongue.

How many reloads are you getting out of a piece of 5.7x28mm brass? My understanding was that it basically trashes the brass upon firing, making anything more than a single reload rather iffy.

IMO, it's an erratic and potentially dangerous poorly-made toy. Stick with calibers and platforms that work well.

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

I liked my 5/7 a bunch - just got to the point of economics - ammo too expensive, so I sold it. Very flat trajectory out close to 100 yards - so my gun did do damage a small prairie dog town before it was sold. More of a novel toy for me.

I think he likes it...lol

Re: Thoughts on the FN Five Seven?

I ended up getting one. lots of fun to shoot. I'm enjoying it. yes it's expensive at 28 bucks for the LE/MIL ammo, but oh well. it was never a cheap hobby.

what's with powderburn's 'this gun blows up' theory? It's like me arguing with this one guy another forum about M&Ps being duds and you will be taking your chances owning one... wtf? I can pull up pictures of most popular weapons blowing up.
