I have a barrel nut that needs new threads tapped. The piece is 1/8 thick soft steel, it can be dimpled with a center punch. What tap should I use, 10-24 or 10-32? And why ?

The second number indicates threads per inch. The larger the number the more interlocking sections which means stronger threads for securement. Since it is soft steel, I highly recommend 10-32 with a dab of loctite.

Know that more threads are stronger, they also get smaller in height as you increase in diameter so cross threading is higher as you go up in TPI (threads per inch)
