No kidding, Secant. I suppose this is what we get when a manufacturer works faster than the ATF.

I seriously want to know if I can exchange a Dominus that just went into jail for one of these Gen 2's??? According to Ray's testing, the Ultra 7 Gen 2 beats the Dominus in sound suppression, weight, and in price. Suddenly the latest and greatest, the Dominus, just went obsolete.

dominus was intended for full auto / semi auto platforms

The Dominus and Ultra 7 Gen2 are very close in suppression. When shot with the same ammo and gun, the Dominus will be less than a half dB quieter; the Dominus will have more recoil reduction, and less backpressure, and it rated for shorter barrels.

From recent testing posted with the same rifle and ammo:

DominusUltra 7 G2
300 WML/R Avg
145.3
144.5
S. Ear
131.6
128.8

According to the Dominus CB's product page:
The DOMINUS-CB is a high-performance .30 caliber suppressor. It delivers three principal design goals:
1. light-weight titanium construction;
2. best-in-class repeatability and accuracy;
and
3. similar suppression to the Ultra series

Also, the page says both it and the Ultra series are rated semi-auto-aimed-fire (SA-AF). And for 7mm and 30 magnums, minimum barrel lengths are the same.

Dominus
18"7mm RM, 7mm WSM, .300 WIN MAG, .300 WSM
20"7mm RUM, .300 RUM
22".300 Norma Magnum, 28 Nosler, 7 STW

Ultra 7
18"7mm RM, 7mm WSM, .300 WIN MAG, .300 WSM
20"7mm RUM, .300 RUM, 7 SAUM, .300 PRC
22".300 Norma Magnum, 28 Nosler, 7 STW

By all of TBAC's official descriptions, there's nothing the Dominus CB can do for a traditional length 7mm/30cal rifle that the Ultra can not also do, besides better sound suppression at a similar size. Therefore I decided to spend the extra money for the Dominus on my 308 win and 300 win mag general purpose and hunting rifles. Now that Ultra Gen 2 is at least as good at suppression and lighter, and the Dominus SR is the go-to for serious high rate of fire, I don't see the Dominus CB selling very well.

So if my main application was a 20" .308 bolt gun, but with some semi-auto 5.56 16" DI AR-15 sprinkled in, would the Dominus-CB still be the better choice overall compared to the Ultra 7 Gen2?

Man... I have two dominus, two u7s, two u9s, a u5 and a 338sr. I don’t even know what i’d put these on but i’m thinking i need about 3 of these new ultras. The numbers are absurd. Good job tbac gang!

Did I miss it or is there a 338 gen2 coming?

Ratings wise, the Dominus can handle a 1” shorter 223 than the Ultra 7 (10.5 vs 11.5). Both are rated to the same rate of fire: “semi auto - aimed fire”. So on paper there should be no difference for your stated role. However, I am sure if both are pushed to their failure, I think the dominus would hold up longer as the SR version was purpose built for higher rate of fire. Otherwise they would have just made an SR version of the Ultra. But I am just theorizing, maybe Zak for Ray can discuss.

I wrote this to the same question on the main Gen2 thread

The Gen2 changes in the small-frame Ultras do not drop into the large-frame 338 Ultra and "just work". We are doing some R&D on a 338 revision but I have no idea what the ETA will be to get gains we consider worthwhile.

The Dominus regardless of CB vs SR takes a given pressure/heat input "better", to put it very simply, vs. the small-frame Ultras. That's how the SR version can have the F/A durability that it does. However, if you are actually going to execute a firing schedule similar to the SOCOM/SURG one, the CB mount will likely back off the brake a little bit, which is why only the SR version has the rating. Hope that makes sense.

The Dominus should also have less backpressure, but I do not have numbers to back that up "yet"
