I have been offered for sale this rifle, Izhmash Tigr .308 win approx 5 years old according to serial nr. The rifle has only been shot on special occasions I´m told, and by the looks of the internals its seems right.

It has a long barrel 25" I think and has a huge Soviet side mounted IPN21 scope.

My question is. I´m going to try it out this weekend, but I have no idea what kind of accuray or shooting charecteristics I should be expecting. I dont want to dismiss it as a junk, and its very cheap.

I have to bring ammo, what should I buy or what should I load for it?

Ps...I do know its not going to be a tack-driver, but it just seems so interesting to own.

Re: Tigr 308win

I've a Tiger, but mines in 7.62X54R and with 7N1 ammo or hand loads it has no problem with minute of chest to 800yds.
True Tigers are not cheap, as there are very few real ones in this country, be they from Russia or China. Many clones are floating around.

I've never seen or shot one that's in .308win so can't help you much with that one.

Re: Tigr 308win

Hey oneyard,

The Tigr's (x54 and 308 versions) are battle rifle accurate with decent ammo/shooter, but you could potentially get better results with some tuning/modifying of the rifle and ammo. They are interesting rifles, but as you observed, don't get your expectations too high for it performance-wise (you'll be hard pressed to get one to MOA in my experience, but there are plenty of folks that claim consistent sub-MOA accuracy from their rifles...conveniently they never seem to post witnessed targets, etc.). The ones I have fired have generally been capable of 2-3MOA...slightly better with ammo tuned for the rifle. Here are some links for you to review that should give you a little more information:

Now, in terms of ammo...your best bet for squeezing the most out of a rifle like the Tigr requires reloading/load development to tailoring the ammo to the rifle. That said, they ones I have fired would eat anything and everything reliably (from commercial to old surplus ammo). Depending on what commercial .308 ammo you have at your disposal, I would try a variety of different options between 150-175gr and see what works best for you.

Man hell with you they are like 4000+ dollars here in the USA. A friend of mine has a 20" barreled one he uses for hunting/target shooting, it is pretty accurate.

From what I have heard the newer models like heavier bullets and shoot MOA or better with decent ammo. If the IP21 is the 3-9 monster thing with a dial on the side i'd probably ditch it for a good old 4x PSO scope.

Re: Tigr 308win

Well... I took the Tigr 308win to the range and it was a "pleasant" experience to shoot. I shot 110gr Hornady TAP, 167gr and 185gr Lapua Scenar Factory Loads and my own reloads with 208gr A-MAX and 177gr semi-solids.

It is a very light rifle but has a rigid feel to it. 25" barrel vith very long flash hider, rather finnicky bipod mounted just forward of the magazine and a side-folding buttstock that when folded locks the trigger mech. It shot all over the place until I fired my 208gr A-Max reloads intended for a bolt-rifle. After the first A-Max shot fired I had to go outside the range to cry a bit...

That was the most unbelieveable double recoil I´ve ever felt. But after I gathered some courage and examined the rifle for any visible damage I fired another 4 A-Max loads that resulted in approx 1.7 MOA ragged group at 100 meters.

I´ll probably buy it for the asking price, 1700 Euro´s

Dont know it as an fact, but heard from country of origin that very best barrels go in Dragunovs which are made in same factory at Izhmash. "leftovers" are for Tigrs. Iron sights are also bit different compared to SVD as well as some internals in trigger.
So in a sense, even Tigr is a clone of original SVD.

Re: Tigr 308win

As I understand it the Tigr comes standard with a 20 inch barrel and is what I have .Chrome lined and not that accurate so far on 155 grain projectiles which I have read they are set up for .The 25 inch barrel is normally associated with the SVDS and is said to be far more accurate .Having read the articles on Dragunov.net by two former snipers I remember one saying he was very confident with making hits at 6-800 metres with his SVD .SH memeber Chrisf has some knowledge of these weapons also as he has imported several into New Zealand and still has one Tigr with a 25inch barrel in 54r.
I myself when money allows may spend 700 plus dollars and have a custom tube fitted as I do enjoy this rifle and shitty scope

Re: Tigr 308win

There are long and short barrel SVD rifles being exported by Izhmash. The newer rifles are supposed to have a faster twist barrel and handle heavier rounds, at least the 54R models. Depending one where they are exported they may or may not have a flash hider, thumbhole stock, sporter stock, yadda yadda. 1700EU sounds about right the ones I saw in NZ were around that price for the full-on SVD and maybe 1500 for a tiger with a sporter stock.

Get a decent PSO scope for it, spend some time handloading and I bet it will surprise you.

I would love to have one but I have to have PSL instead

Re: Tigr 308win

SVDS are only exported from Russia to millatary buyers where as the Tigr isnt considered an SVD but a hunting rifle .The main differences are the barrel length - gas can be altered on the SVD not on the Tigr -bayonet fitting -there maybe something with the trigger but I dont know of that .SVD and Tigr are different and so is the price to buy them .In NZ we are raped with about $2700-$3200 for the tigr depending on the stock configeration .In reality these are a shit cheap rifle that probably cost about $600-$800 to buy if that from Izmash and then they are sold at a crazy price here -Gun City in NZ sell them and they have no shame at all, funny the owner wore the orange suit in the States once for illegally trying to export arms from their -good job

Re: Tigr 308win

If you didn't pay $7000-$12000 for a true Soviet SVD, then you don't have a true Soviet SVD. I have shot hundreds of rounds through one while in the Soviet military L O N G time ago. These babes are sweet out to 800+ meters on a man-torso target with the Russian 7N series of Match ammo. That's what they were designed for, a semi-auto sniper system. A bad name to these excellent rigs is usually given by cheap knock offs and copies like the PSL, Kadish, and few others that have absolutely nothing to do with the SVD reality.

Tigr rifles are not shit. These are hunting guns capable of decent out of box accuracy out to 500 yards or so...No one ever said these are benchrest rigs designed to punch through tiny bullseyes at any range... Do I like them? No. There are better options for the money.

Holy shit 3k? A buddy of mine lives there outside invirtcargill and I remember him paying the equivalent of 2kUSD for one with skele stock and 4X PSO. His is the long barrel and syn furniture, no flash hider in 54R. Ammunition prices he quoted me were pretty high too, I think he was using some steel cased stuff at 20$ a box...
