Gunsmithing tikka rebarreling

I wanted to know what options are available for rebarreling one. Plan to retain the factory recoil lug/ notch as rifle is currently in a xlr chassis. I seem to find different info on what the front of the action looks like, some say the barrel shoulder is recessed some imply it is flat like savage/ Remington. Which is it? If it is recessed can that be milled down and a traditional shouldered barrel of any od be used. Talked to my smith, Geoff Corn, he has worked on a couple but that was 6-7yrs ago.

I am planning on dropping my Tikka action into an XLR chassis when I re-barrel. So, I am definitely interested in what you find out.

If you are talking about a T-3, they are easier to rebarrel than a Rem., no recess to mess with, etc. They have a straight shoulder.

If you are referring to a 591 (which your gunsmith may have worked on if it was 6-7 years ago), I'm not familiar with it.

factory barrel measures 1.13@ the shoulder, there is room for bigger o.d. in the stock but the action measures1.2" across the flatsides. A 1.2" round barrel on a 1.2" multi sided action will have areas of the barrel that stick out beyond the action. Seems to me that 1.15" is as big of a barrel that still looks right. Sucks cause i can find all kinds of 1.2" 6.5 mm barrels that have the right twist in stock but no 1.13ish barrels.

gunsmith will fit barrel o.d. you want....

That is true, i just prefer the barrel contour to be set before the barrel is lapped by the manufacturer. Meaning i will probably have to order a contour.

Having a smith turn off .050" off a 1.2" barrel really won't affect the barrel any more than than when they take off .200" to cut the tennon thread. While it's true that the smith then does go in and cut the chamber, remember that they chamber will be around 2" long roughly. This means that the .050 taken off the shank really only overlaps around an inch of actual rifle bore, maybe less.

If you have the time to wait for an entirely new contour then why not do it but you probably won't notice any accuracy difference, especially if this isn't a benchrest rifle.

Good call massoud, did not think of it like that. Mentioned what you said to my local smith and he agreed. He also mentioned that since it will be a Krieger or bartlien cut rifle that they have less stress induced during rifling then a button pulled barrel. He did say most all good barrels are stress releived, but cut would have less stress induced. He wants to see the barreled action before i order a blank to see what i need for sure. In the air on caliber, i have 3 243 1-8 twist and 2 6.5cm. I was leaning hard to creedmoor but the last couple boxes of hornady brass started losing primer pockets at 3-4 reloads, 42.0 gr h4350&140 amax.

Have your 'smith face off and square the front of the action, then any 1.250 barrel matches the flat spots on the receiver.

That looks good 284, not for sure how the xlr would work with a sandwich recoil lug. Stock would need to be heavily modified. I should have the stock in a couple weeks. Found a lv contour Krieger.236" bore . 25" 243 1-8 twist should be completed in a couple weeks. If i had a mcm or manners stock that would be the way to go.
