Gunsmithing Tikka takeoff

I am trying to find a fluted Tikka takeoff but wanted to find out from someone who has already done it to see if the flutes “time” in the correct position. I figure if they correctly headspace off of the front of the action, the flutes should be fine or very nearly so. Haven’t been able to catch up with anyone who has done it yet.

I know they sell pretty quickly when posted here in the classifieds so if you’ve done it, share your experience and pics if you have them.

I don’t know what you mean as far as the flutes time in in the correct position as they are symmetrical. None of the writing of the factory barrels ended up in the same orientation as they come from the factory when screwed into my actions. I have a fluted 6.5 PRC barrel where the writing faces straight down and is covered by the stock. My CTR barrel has the writing upside down on the opposite side compared to the factory orientation.

Maybe “time” was the wrong way to describe it but you answered my question. Basically would the writing be in the normal place or in the case of the fluting, would I end up with a flute (or a flat spot) centered at the 12 o’clock position in line with the top of the receiver like it does on a factory rifle.

It's likely very optimistic to think that a mass-produced barrel from Tikka will swap to another mass-produced receiver and index the flutes correctly. What drives this boat is the start point of the thread on the barrel and the receiver and to get it right is literally splitting hairs.

The better path is to hang the blank on the receiver and flute it afterward. You avoid all the headaches that way.
