To bed or not to bed...

Putting my first build together. Picked up a McM A5. It's at the factory getting inletted for a Badger Ord M5 now. Putting a Rem 700 S/A AAC-SD in it. McM says it's not necessary to bed it. Anyone have an opinion on this? I'm pushing the limits of my budget and getting the bedding done is another expense that if it's not nessesary, according to McMillan, I don't really want to do it. Thanks for the advise.

You could bed it yourself! Check out the thread here on the hide. Very interesting and full of info! I agree with JerseyMike I would bed it also. You could also shoot it first see what the results are and if not to your liking then bed!

Re: To bed or not to bed...

A lot of people bed simply because they hear about it and think they should. Some rifles will gain nothing from bedding while others will gain a considerable amount.

Mine, for example, locks well into the stock. When I torque both screws then remove the back one, there is no movement in the action/stock at the rear. I've had a couple smiths look at it, say they'll take my money but I probably wouldn't see any change in accuracy.

Given how well my rifle shoots when heated after a number of shots and in different weather conditions, I decided not to worry about it.

It isn't going to hurt to bed it but the degree of helping may not be as much as you'd like. If you've got the money...go for it. If you have to save for it...see how it groups first, if it's in the 1/2-3/4 MOA, I wouldn't worry.

Re: To bed or not to bed...

While seanh makes a good argument, and his rifle did exceptionally well without bedding, his rifle is without a doubt, the exception.

I shoot with my Manners MCS-T stock, and even while Manners is the ONLY stocks I use, I still have mine bedded. Even Tom himself recommends bedding, regardless of stock.

Bed it and forget it. Once that is done, the rest is gravy.

Bed it so when you shoot that cold bore shot or you get a flyer, you won't wonder if its your action moving on you

You guys have great points. Do you know anything about Dave Bruno in Pennsylvania? He is close to me. Might have him do the work.

Re: To bed or not to bed...

Bedding will not hurt anything and in many cases improves consistency if not accuracy as well. Read the sticky thread in the gunsmithing section, take your time and bed it yourself. It’s a Win/Win and doing it yourself will bring you closer to your rifle which that alone will make you a more confident shooter

Usually. As long as you don't do something really bad like forget to put release agent or let the epoxy create a mechanical lock. If you simply end up with an ugly bedding job, it's a simple matter of grinding out the epoxy and trying again. If you read the stickied thread in its entirety, there isn't a whole lot to go wrong. You don't HAVE to bed it, but it's a bit more confidence-inspiring to shoot a bedded rifle.
