To bed or not to bed???

I am about to buy a manners stock and have a dilemma.

I can't decide if I want to go with the mini chassis or the pillars and bed the stock. I have a buddy that runs the chassis system and he loves it. Have another buddy who swears by bedding the stock.

Does anyone have both and see a difference? Any reason why one might be better than the other(besides cost).

I just ordered a stock with the Mini-DBM. I don't like gunsmiths, so the less I have to work with them the better. Bedding material degrades with time, so not only do I have to deal with them up front, I have to deal with them again in a decade or more. No thanks.

And it's cheaper than bedding whether you're using the DBM or the BDL.

I would go with pillar bedding and dbm. It is way over a pound lighter and the mini chassis has one flaw that I don't like. don't get me wrong it is a solid piece of kit, but I think a proper pillar bedding job is a little better. check out my reasoning here: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/snipers-hide-d-i-y/197805-bedding-manners-t2a-mini-chasis.html
Also a quality bedding job will not degrade over time.

Why not get the dbm? Personally, I'd get the BDM version of the mini-chassis. If it doesn't shoot to your liking, then bed it. Mine shoots bugholes without bedding.

ajwcotton, sure its over a pound lighter? Have you weighed them or are you going off of adding mfg numbers? If I recall, the published numbers you see for bottom metal are without magazine, and I believe manners weight includes it. I could be wrong though, but I don't think the weight savings are noticeable if they even exist.

Sierracharlie, like you, I wouldn't want a DBM system for a hunting rifle but rather the traditional flush mounted BDL looks.

As far as bedding goes, I advise you to go with the mini-chassis. It's a more modular configuration in that you can change out the barreled action (within reason), the weight difference is negligible, and (most importantly) I have found that the mini-chassis shoots just as well as a bedded system (all other factors equal - I compared a Surgeon Rifles bedded MCM A5 with the same barreled action in a MCS T3 mini-chassis).

Get the Mini-Chassis, you will not be disappointed. It cost a little more now but worth it...

i've made my opinion known here about vee-block chassis systems. i say run the mini-chassis without worry.

I prefer to have an action bedded even if it's sitting in a chassis. I had my KRG chassis bedded and plan on having it done with my AICS stock as well.

So I called manners to get a little more info and happened to ask About turn around time. . . .




4-5 months!!!

I went ahead and ordered it with the mini chassis system since I have a bedded action already.
