Anyone know if I can get away with running a surefire 556mini on a 7.1” 4.6x30 cal Tommybuilt mp7. I already have the can and would like to be able to run it on this platform, but I’m concerned about the barrel length. And just for clarification I have the surefire MP7 specific muzzle brake. Thank you in advance.

We used 5.56 suppressors (AAC) a lot on our MP7s. No issues at all. They were actually much preferred over the B&T that attaches to the original muzzle device. Shorter, lighter, better noise reduction and easier to attach and take off.

Yeah, I was just more curious about the actual Surefire 556 mini can and the fact that surefire says that they don’t like it on anything under 16 inches but I’ve seen people who have run 556 mini cans on their MP7’s in pictures and was curious if anyone had any real world experience or any advice.

nice pics.

Shame the MP7 recoils so much and the 4.6x30 isn't as effective as it really needs to be ballistically (at least from every practical test I've seen). the gun itself is still an absolutely iconic piece.

I find the recoil to be minimal. A good bit less than a short 5.56, even still noticably less than my suppressed 16" 5.56.
Probably the only good thing I can say about the MP7, maybe the handy size too.

Everybody who has the slightest clue about ballistics knows just by the numbers that the 4.6 round doesn't have much energy. But after some extensive ballistic testing we found it was even worse than expected. Escpecially if any kind of barrier is involved. The energy after barrier penetration is substantially less than that of a 9mm out of a pistol with decent duty ammo.

We've had a mix of 416s and MP7s for a long time but we are in the process of completely switching out all the MP7s for 11" 416A5s.

Over here in Europe it's so common among police units that it doesn't even have the cool factor going for it :ROFLMAO:

even just a bump to 5.7x28 would have been a good move, which is why I’m curious if PSA might make a version of that 5.7 PDW they’re working on for LEO sales

I’m a little surprised you’re not following the dutch and UK in moving to 300blk. better barrier blindness and suppression options.

When i started we had a mix of MP5s (which i love and miss dearly) P90s and 416s. All smgs were replaced with the MP7 at some stage, for no logical reason in my opinion. Just settling on the short 416 like we do now would've made more sense.

As for 300blk...

When they were relatively new we had a couple of Sig MCX rifles in 300blk, they were total pieces of shit. Extremely inconsistent accuracy and reliability issues, both with several different types of decent quality ammo (black hills, Ruag, Sig). Our colleagues from the close protection team for government officials have had Daniel Defense pdw rifles in 300blk for a few years now and had a lot of issues with those as well. They are running fine now and i know DD is usually putting out good stuff but still...

So that's our personal experience with anything that was at the time available here in 300blk. I know that's not the calibers fault, and i know there's good rifles on the market now and it's a good chambering for LE applications.
But we also know the 416s are working flawlessly for us for over a decade now and there's no need to take a risk and possibly waste more money again on something that might not be 100% good to go.

edit: if HK wasn't so damn slow in adopting new things a 416 in 300blk would've been a nice choice. But they barely now realized that MLOK handguards are indeed a thing people would like to have

edit2: as for 5.7, i have no personal experience, but heard first hand from operators from two different units in Belgium (one police one military) that had very disappointing results when using their P90s in defensive shootings/combat.
