Anyone see this from Bristol???

WTH???? NASCAR always prided itself on sportsmanship. Yes, paint gets traded. Crashes happen. Drivers DNF... but what is with this?

Behavior is just infantile. And dangerous as hell. Something I'd expect from an NBA thug, not a NASCAR driver. What an asshat.

Someone needs to sit out a season or two... or go back to driving go-carts.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

I can understand the frustration of loosing the lead and race with a dumb move like that but it is defenitely a bad example of sportsmanship, but we are all humans afterall.
good throw though.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

Remember NASCAR used to be filled with Hot heads settling things on the track or in the pits. You screw up and wreck someone you may get your A## beat! NASCAR changed it to make it more POLITICALLY CORECT for the masses and ruined it! I think all the changes to make it "better" racing has just ruined the sport, and ratings prove it. Heck with the new cars I myself have only watch bits and pieces of 4 or 5 races.

Last year they tried to let them bring some of the personality back and it got better. Heck back in the day you wreck a guy like that you could be assured he was going to put you in the wall! Now with the point penalties and the case being so important, retaliation is not acceptable. Except for Carl Edwards last year!
Just like most things appeasing the big dollar sponsors is the name of the game; it’s a 500 mile advertisement and if they wreck the company does not get what it paid for.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

Not a TS fan but I have to say that I didn't find it offensive that he threw his helmet at another car. Nothing different than two football players going at it on the field IMHO. So, player A doesn't like the little extra jab he got from player B. He gives B a little "I didn't like that" shove and player B thinks player A is being a jerk so he crawls on his ass. That, in a sense, is what happened last night. It happens every weekend, in some fashion, in some sport. It is what we, as fans, want to see. Not on every play mind you, but we still want to see fire from those high paid athletes.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

1. it's bristol, it should happen.

2. notice all the empty seats? ^ see willys post above.

3. NASCAR got popular they charged more, the very people that made it popular can't afford it anymore.

4. glad to see stewart bring back the fact that they are highly motivated people racing a car for guts glory and cash, and when someone does something semi-intentional, they get called on it.

(the danica wreck - i think she came down on the other car, don't think she has a leg to stand on, but she probably gives great helmet)

5. seemingly, the spirit of what brought nascar to where it was a few years ago died in turn 4 at daytona in 2001.

IMO stewart was almost going to be the next "man" but went to anger managment and castrated himself. i think the next best hope is kyle busch, but looks as if he too may get the scissors.

next up brad keslowski.

keep sterility at the hospital, leave nascar a bit "germy". it needs the grit.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

The helmet throw was awesome, Stewart Rocks.

Not to mention during Driver Intro's Stewart introduced himself as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Goes to show his humor, and his champoinships shows his drive.

Not a Kenseth fan, so no big deal.

unless it's something crazy to jeopardize safety like what happened when what's his name rammed what's his face intentionally coming out of the pits awile ago ( a scene right out of days of thunder), what's the harm?

windshields are ballistic plexiglass to resist punctures at 200 mph, a helmet at 45 mph pacelap might scuff it.

personality built the sport, the lack of it is killing (killed) it.

granted change is usually good, but sometimes it's best to leave things alone as that's what gives it it's strength. notice the 2% banking milling to try to get bristol more like it was? they shouldn't have messed with something that was working in the first place.

from the first televised race there was the multi person brawl at daytona (back when they actually used real cars). there used to be this type of thing all the time, you'll have this and should have this with type A people.

Fueds started and fueled the sport, now it's filled, to use an analogy, with airsofters and mall ninjas cookie cut out to look pretty on camera with prepared statements.

nascar needs the D. earnhardts, R. wallaces, J. spencers, B. allisons, B. bakers, C. yarboroughs reincarnated, otherwise stick wrestlers in bumper boats and put a wreath on what was a very good run.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

I am all for competition and some hotheadedness... but throwing a helmet? That was just juvenile.

Peronally, I think they messed up NASCAR not when they went 'family' but when they went with standardized cars and took the mechanical ingenuity and STOCK car racing out of it.

Back 'in the day' you had engines from 3 (or more) big automakers. You had chassis designed and sometimes illegally tweaked to win. You had car bodies that had to template to cars that were actually sold on a dealers lot. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. You had brilliant engineering (and mischevious cheating like 5" diameter fuel lines) that improved the breed and created a real race. And if your engineering sucked... you LOST. Engineering gave you an edge... it was not an equalizer.

IMHO, racing is made of three things: Great drivers. Great engineering/chassis/motors. And great pit crews/crew chiefs/strategists. Take the engineering out by giving everyone an equal car (except for the stickers) and you take the whole point of STOCK car racing out of the race. IMHO, that change to cup-cake-generation noone gets a mechanical advantage had a far worse impact on changing NASCAR racing than asking that its drivers demonstrate sportsmanship (at least for the camera.)

And as I said, I am all for spirited competition and perhaps even some 'behind the scenes' lessons or arguments or feuds. Makes things interesting. I like drivers with personalities. But helmet tossing like we saw yesterday does little more than turn a great racing sport into a soap opera. Next, we'll see them hitting each other with chairs.

Re: Tony Stewart Launches Helmet at another car?!!!!!?

Stewart isn't the first "helmet thrower" NASCAR has seen and he won't be the last. Another great "driver" did something similar a few years back; in fact, Stewart almost hit the helmet after it bounced off it's target. Great drivers have a drive that shows at times. When the drive fails to show through, the sport will be unwatchable.

Only a redneck would take 177 laps to get around the same corner.

HaHaHa . When he threw it i thought that it was a good thing that it hit the front of the hood. That was serious heat, I thought that it was going to go right through the windshield.

Everybody lighten up. Does everybody in the garage have to model themselves after Jimmy goody gumdrops Johnson?

Didn't get one, did he?
Would have if had been a repeat offender.
Don't want the WWE in NASCAR but I do like to see some fire in the drivers.
The last two races before The Chase will show who wants it and just how bad. The Wild Card thing is the show right now.

I'm glad he didn't get a fine. I get your point on NASCAR inconsistency in discipline.

I'm hoping that he doesn't get into a pissing match with Kenseth. I didn't think Kenseth did anything dirty and there is all of next year to settle any "scores".

Now is the time to get down over the wheel.
