I'm fortunate enough to have a close friend who leases about 700 acres in Monroe County in southwestern Alabama. Been hunting this area for a few years & while does are shot in abundance, it seems that we don't see decent bucks until the rut in mid to late January.
I got lucky with this one on Thursday evening. He came out about 5:15pm & was just passing through the green field I was hunting. Shot was roughly 50yds with a 115gr. Sierra Pro Hunter in 6.8SPC (its my hog hunting setup; didn't see any hogs the entire weekend unfortuately). The rig uses a Cardinal upper with WOA barrel & Millet DMR scope. One shot to the lungs & he bolted for about 60yds and that was it. ZERO blood trail; found the bullet just underneath the hide at the opposing shoulder. Complete mushroom effect & nearly 100% bullet weight retention. While the bullet certainly did its job I much prefer having a blood trail. Next time I may go back to my .260 or .308 or take the high shoulder shot so I don't have to track the critter.
It's not a monster but a decent buck for this property. I'm going to do the backstraps this weekend for Super Bowl!
